Obituary

John Joseph Sowa went home to our Lord on April 10, 2024 in The Villages, Fl. John was born on August 4, 1942 in Brooklyn, NY to Joseph and Loretta Sowa.
After a high school career at St. Anthony of Padua in Watkins Glen, NY where John excelled in basketball, baseball, soccer and cross-country, he went on to graduate from St. John’s University in Brooklyn, NY with a teaching degree and furthered his education with Masters Degrees in English and Administration.
John’s long career in education began as a high school teacher at Franklin K. Lane in Brooklyn, NY and then at Middle Township High School in Cape May County, NJ. He went on in the district to become Principal of Elementary 1.
John was active in church functions at Our Lady of the Angels in Cape May Court House, NJ as a member of the Parish Council, a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus, and an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. He was an accomplished guitarist and writer of song with a dozen published hymns for church services. He loved writing a song for his wife Marcia every time she turned a new decade, songs she treasures. His Christian faith was a priority in his life, and he continued his life-long devotion to our Lord and His Mother at St. Vincent de Paul in Wildwood, Fl.
John was an avid reader, especially of mystery novels. He was a seasoned traveler with his wife Marcia, enjoyed golfing in earlier years here in The Villages, and walking his precious pet shih tzu, Zoe. His warm and outgoing personality was evident in the many people he enjoyed meeting and talking with on his walks.
John is survived by his beloved wife Marcia of nearly 60 years, a son Christopher (Jennifer) and a daughter Lisa, as well as four grandchildren, Ryan (Caroline), Justin (Alana), Julia and Emily, a great-granddaughter, Lilly, his sister Terry, his brother Joe (Debbie) and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on April 25, 2024 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Wildwood, Fl. at 1:00 P.M. Inurnment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Cold Spring, NJ at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cornerstone Hospice of The Villages.

Rich and I are unable to find the words to express what you have meant to us. You and Marcia embraced us when we moved down here. We shared many, many great times together and also some not so great moments. You made a lasting impression on both Chelsea and Stephen. Imparting your wisdom on them will always be treasured.
Not only were you a neighbor, you were a dear friend we could share anything with, of which we considered you our village family. Your kindness, thoughtful and caring manner meant so very much. Rich will miss your conversations when he found you sitting outside and joined you.
I will remember the baked goods I made of which I believe you enjoyed.
    You were always a gentleman.
We are proud to known you and will be so dearly missed. Thank you for being a special man in our lives. Someday we will meet again. Sending our eternal love.

I was one of Mr. Sowa's students in Honors English at MTHS. Thanks to the wonderful person who answered the phone at Elementary #1 one day who helped me set up a surprise conversation, I was able to tell him how much of an influence he had had on my life and career. How that pesky girl in his classes had gone on to take a doctorate and was an executive leader at a college. How I was still writing, thanks to the information he was so free in sharing. How his creativity in teaching was something I was striving to emulate. I think of Mr. Sowa often, remembering his Ninja-like abilities to catch people who tried to cheat in his classes as well as his guitar-accompanied instruction on Shakespeare. When I told him how one of his lessons had given me a leg up in my first-year English courses in college, I could almost see his smile through the telephone. Mr. Sowa's encouragement has emboldened me to become a published fiction and academic writer who advocates for creativity in doctoral education. I suspect I'll find him in Heaven one day, prowling the library stacks and singing. I look forward to that joyful celebration and in the meantime, mourn his passing with an upcoming writing on my Medium account titled Wizards In Plain Sight ... blessings to the family at this challenging time.

John was a gifted teacher, and a mentor to many younger teachers. His sense of humor was dry and quick, his smile was warm, and he was a true Gentleman. I have many fond memeories of working with him, and of dinners with my Susan, John, and Marcia.
