Obituary

Joseph Orr was born on a snowy groundhog’s day in 1939 and passed away on a rainy day, peacefully, at Halifax Health Hospice on 11/16/2023 at 9:43am.  He fought a long battle with Multiple Myeloma and ultimately his body was not able to fight off that disease and its other side effects.

Joe was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.  He is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Betty) of 61 years, his children, Joseph (Darlene), George and Susan (Bill).  Additionally, he was the proud grandfather of Amanda (Sean), Hailey, Alex, Sydney (Colin), Ellie, Reed, Joey and Ryan.  He was also the great grandfather of Evelyn, Brayden, Lincoln, Charlie and Scottie.  His Sisters Maryann and Bonnie, both survive him as well as many cousins, nephews, and nieces.  He is fondly remembered by his sister-in-law and her husband Georgiann and Jim Timmerman.

Joes long golf history started at the age of 9 where he began as a caddy and continued throughout his life with many trophies and major awards.  His love of the game (and the late sleeper group) continued as a long-standing member of Plantation Bay Country Club.

Joe spent his working career in construction working primarily for 2 companies.  He started with Gust K Newberg Construction and was able to build everything from Hospitals and Nuclear Power Plants to Baseball Stadiums.  Of particular note, while Joe was being interviewed in the late 1980’s by Bob Vila about the construction of New Comisky Baseball Stadium in Chicago, Bob stated that Joe really knew what he was doing, Joe simply responded “yes, Bob, I do.”

The second half of his career was spent with Baker Concrete Construction where he was able to continue his construction career focusing on the same type of structures as well as building lifelong friends.

If you knew him, and he called you “Big Boy” you were very special to him.

Along the way from Golf to Newberg to Baker Concrete, Joe made friends everywhere he went.  His family, his friends and his coworkers are saddened by his passing, but as his favorite song says Red, Red Wine, it’s up to you, All I can do I’ve done.  But memories won’t go, no memories won’t go.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Joe at Prestwick Clubhouse at Plantation Bay Country Club.  The celebration will be held on Sunday 11/26/23 from 1-3pm.  Please join Betty and her family in remembrance of Joe.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that you consider a donation to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).

Please use this link to contribute and view his fundraising page.

Joes has multiple grandchildren who were diagnosed very young with type1 juvenile diabetes, and he spent his life supporting this organization and its search for a cure.  Any help to this wonderful organization is deeply appreciated by the family.
