Obituary
On Tuesday, December 1st, 2020, Joyce Coleman Powell, loving mother of two children, passed away at the age of 96. Joyce was born on September 12th, 1924, in Sarasota, Florida to her parents Lena & W. V. Coleman.
Joyce’s spirited personality truly was a reflection of her diverse life and experiences. Joyce began her career as a member of the aerial ballet in the original Ringling Circus, appearing with her sisters amongst the many talented members of the show. During World War II, Joyce contributed to the national effort by producing precision navigation instruments for the defense industry. Joyce then brought her efforts to Blue Cross & Blue Shield, eventually retiring after 35 years with the organization.
Joyce had a passion for both her family and adventure. Her disposition for excitement was ever-apparent in her feisty yet sweet attitude. This was underscored when she once remarked that the only essentials she needed for an upcoming trip were “her panties and her lipstick.” Joyce loved needlework and was often complimented for her smart fashion, fancy jewelry, and bright red lipstick. She also enjoyed singing in the church choir and was as an active member of West Flagler Baptist and Dayspring Community Churches.
Joyce was preceded in death by her father, her mother, sisters Quilla, Agnes, Era, and Eunice, brothers Garlin and Virgil Jr., as well as Richard Harvey, Wayne Powell, and Charles Hoffstetter. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Julie, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A celebration of life visitation will be held on Saturday, December 5th, 2020, from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at Baldwin Brothers located at One North Causeway in New Smyrna, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Dayspring Community Church, in memory of Joyce Powell, at 902 South Spring Garden Avenue, DeLand, Florida, 32720.
Condolences on the passing of a very strong, independent and beautiful woman. The loss of a mother and grandmother is very difficult. Know that she will now be dancing in heaven. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. God Bless You all.
With sincere sympathy,
Tricia Harder
