Obituary

Julia (Grace) Huey Luther passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at the New Smyrna Beach Assisted Living Facility where she resided for the past three years.  Grace was born in the small Georgia town of Cordele (watermelon capital of the world) on March 1, 1926. She was the daughter of Edward Levy Huey and Mary Ellen Richardson Huey.  She was the youngest of 9 children and spent a lot of time in her childhood working on the family farm picking cotton and tobacco.  She moved to Miami, Florida with an older sister in the early 1940’s where she met her husband to be, Robert (Bob) Luther.   Grace married Bob in Miami on January 25, 1945 when Grace was a telephone operator and Bob was a Signalman 3rd Class in the U.S. Navy.  After the war, Grace and Bob moved to Jacksonville, Florida to raise a family.  Grace was very excited that they could buy a brand new house for $6000. Their mortgage payment was $38 per month.  Being a country girl she said “Why would anyone want anything more than this?”  (The house was a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, less than 1000 square feet with oil heating and no air conditioning.)  In 1971 the family moved to DeLand, Florida where Grace had her own cleaning business.  She had many friends and loved to bowl, work in the yard, jog with Bob, workout at the gym and play cards and board games.  Grace was preceded in death by Bob who passed in July 2007 and her son Steven Luther (Holly) of Palm Coast, Florida who passed in November 2015. Grace is survived by three children – Barry Luther (Susan) of Gainesville Florida, Earleen Redner (Amos) of Clearwater, Florida, Chuck Luther (Annette) of Edgewater, Florida; grandchildren – Kimberly Snedeker (Clint), of Clearwater Florida and Travis Luther (Niki), of Palm Coast, Florida; great grandchildren – Emma Grace Snedeker, Cora Lynn Snedeker, and Penelope Belle Luther.    Her family celebrated her 92nd birthday with her before her passing 5 days afterwards.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Vitas Hospice of Volusia County.  The family wishes to thank the staff of the New Smyrna Beach Assisted Living for all the great care given to Grace and also a very special thanks to Jackie and her Team 212 of Vitas for the care and comfort they provided to Grace in her final days.  To share condolences, please visit www.BaldwinCremation.com.
