Obituary

Larry Zelensky

January 18, 1956 – February 20, 2021

On February 20, 2021, Larry Zelensky, died after a short illness in Port Orange, Florida. Larry was born on January 18, 1956 at St. Francis Hospital in Hamtramck, Michigan to Leon and Mary (nee: Kerns) Zelensky. He attended Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Centerline High School. After graduation, he attended the Center for Creative Studies.

His life was filled with art and music.  He was a remarkable artist and creative talent. He established his company, Human Touch Graphic Design, 30 years ago and worked with many wonderful people, producing advertising and marketing campaigns for a wide variety of clients. He also recently started a new venture, Detroit Design Works.

Larry and Debbie were able to spend quality time in South Daytona, Florida, enjoying the things he loved, sunshine, water and warm weather.  He lived life to the fullest, attending concerts, dinner with friends, bike rides, walking his dogs and at least 20 trips to Key West.

Larry is survived by his life partner, Debbie Powell, of 32 years, his mother Mary Zelensky, sister Cheryl (Robin) Caruss, brother David (Angela) Zelensky, many nieces, nephews, other family members, close friends and fur daughters, Roxie and Sophie.

Larry was preceded in death by his father Leon.

Donations can be made to the Michigan Humane Society or any animal rescue organization of your choice.

For Larry, life was a journey, sometimes not knowing what lay around the next bend, but confident it would be worth the trip. A life celebration will be held in Michigan later this year.

There will never be another "LZ." We too are heartbroken with this loss. Larry was our senior graphic artist and special friend for 35 of our 36 years as a firm and creative group. LZ was also a renaissance man in his own right. He did more than graphic and art design. He read widely and thought deeply; bringing his total personhood to everthing he did. He and Debbie became most respected, treasured and valued friends, as well as LZ being a vital member of our team. Thank you Larry for being part of our trip. We shall miss you and always treasure our memories -- personified in the 35 annual holiday cards you did for us; which became icons for you and us. Leland and Tina Bassett for The Bassett Business Group.

Dear Debbie, My deepest and most heart felt condolences. I loved Larry's laugh and animated personality. You two were always laughing together. Well when I joked with him and told him I was trying to teach my dog to talk he jokingly told me he read any article about dogs saying they didn't have a voice box! LOL

Debbie, we are all so sorry for your tremendous loss. Larry was warm, funny and wonderful. When I think of you two, I remember the laughter. Lots of laughter. I remember my brother Steve’s wedding, when a bunch of Yankees were taken on a long dark journey into the Mississippi night to find Tunica, the gambling Mecca of Mississippi. We gambled with the bride and groom until the sun came up. When we came to visit and watch a Red Wings game with you we were awed by his enthusiasm for his team. My prayers are with you, and Bobby, Mary and Caitlin.
