Obituary
With great sadness, we announce the passing of LaVerne J White on April 11th, 2024, a pillar of strength and compassion. LaVerne entered this world in 1942 in Moline, IL, and was the only son of Callyn and Hazel White. His journey touched countless lives in profound ways.
It’s heartbreaking to add that LaVerne, once a vibrant and cherished presence, faced the relentless progression of Alzheimer’s disease, which gradually dimmed the light of his memories and clouded his once sharp mind. Battling the challenges of dementia with dignity and resilience, he navigated each day with courage, but ultimately succumbed to the complications it brought. Laverne’s story underscores the profound impact of neurodegenerative illnesses and the crucial need for support for both those affected and their loved ones. In the memories of those who knew him, Laverne’s spirit endures as a symbol of strength and the enduring power of love in the face of adversity.
LaVerne’s passion for photography was unmatched, as an artist with a camera. As the visionary behind Portraits by LaVerne that he started in Aledo, IL in 1961 and continued in Ocoee, FL until he retired in 2016. He had a unique gift for embellishing the natural attributes and capturing the true essence of the personality, preserving memories that will be cherished for generations to come. His lens not only framed scenes but also the hearts of those he photographed, leaving an indelible mark on each image.
LaVerne’s life was marked by service and sacrifice. He served his country as a chaplain’s assistant in the US Army during the tumultuous era of the Vietnam War, demonstrating unwavering courage and dedication to his fellow soldiers.
Beyond his military service, LaVerne was a cornerstone of faith and community. For decades, he stood as the treasurer and board member at New Horizons Christian Church, where his wisdom, compassion, and guidance enriched the lives of all who knew him. His commitment to his faith was unwavering, and his presence in the congregation brought comfort and solace to many.
LaVerne found his greatest joy in the embrace of his family. He leaves behind his cherished wife, Cheri White, whose love sustained him through life’s trials and triumphs. His legacy lives on through his three children – Teena Mendoza, Andy White, Ken Lambert – and their families, including seven beloved grandchildren who were the light of his life.
His life will be celebrated in a funeral service at Baldwin Brothers Funeral Home in Apopka, FL, on Saturday, April 20th, at 12 pm. Prior to the service, visitation will be held at the same location starting at 10 am, providing an opportunity for friends and loved ones to pay their respects and share cherished memories of LaVerne.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Central Florida.
