Mary “Cookie” Kelly Petrakis, 61 of Winter Park passed peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 with her husband and family by her side. Mary was born May 5, 1951 in Rahway, NJ to the late Mary Ann and Thomas Kelly. Mary grew up in Fairfield, CT., the second oldest of eight children. When her mother died Mary was only 16 years old and became a second mother to her six younger siblings, the youngest of whom was only three. After high school graduation she followed her high school sweetheart, John J. Petrakis to college in Jacksonville, FL. After graduating as a Registered Nurse she and John married on May 14, 1973. They settled in Jacksonville and had two sons. Mary worked in the Pediatric ICU for several years until after the birth of their second child. In 1988 they moved to Winter Springs and then to Winter Park. As the children got older and John’s business’s grew she became his office and marketing manager, but always his partner. Mary was a devoted wife and mother to her family and her siblings. Mary is truly the matriarch of the Petrakis and Kelly families. Life will go on because of the strong life lessons she taught her family. She is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, John; their two sons, James John and wife, Julie and Brian and wife, Angila; her adored grandson, John James and her second grandchild due this November. Mary is also survived by her seven siblings, Tim Kelly, Susan Kelly, Mark Kelly, Connie Matis, Colleen Moore, Alane King and Meg Hovsepian. In lieu of flowers Mary requested donations to PANCAN.org (Pancreatic Cancer Action Network).

In reading this you will most likely not recognize my name as someone who came in contact with Cookie. I was saddened to have read of her passing in the paper this past Sunday. Up till about two years ago I worked by the Millenia Mall and was a customer several times per week at that Greens and Grille location. I remember Cookie always having a smile on her face and such a kind and generous spirit. We would briefly discuss our health issues or just say hello. Although it had been awhile since I last saw her I wanted to let you know how she touched other's lives that she barely knew.
Sorry for your loss.
