Obituary

Maurice Lee Hamilton, 79, of Mount Dora, Florida, departed on April 4th, 2024, and joined his late wife of 54 years, Carmen Hamilton in the Kingdom of Heaven. In the days leading up to his passing, he was surrounded by his loving family. Maurice is survived by his three sons, David Alexander Hamilton of Mount Dora, Florida, Timothy John (T.J.) Hamilton of Viera, Florida, and Kevin Lee Hamilton of Longwood, Florida, his brother, Gary Hamilton, and sisters, Patty Spires and Sharon Edgington, along with seven grandsons and three granddaughters.

Maurice Hamilton was a loyal servant to God and held an unwavering faith throughout his entire life, which he shared with those who surrounded him. He was a member of the Morris Chapel Methodist Church in Blue Creek Ohio and later the East Liberty Community Church in Lynx Ohio. After marrying, he and his wife were members of the Sciotoville Church of Christ in Sciotoville, Ohio before moving to Florida where he was an integral member of Lakeview Christian Church, known today as Journey Christian Church, in Apopka. He loved the church and loved sharing the love and warmth of our savior, Jesus Christ. Most recently he attended the Lake County Campus of Journey Christian Church where he dedicated many of his hour’s volunteering. Now that Maurice has passed into the arms of our Lord, we should remind ourselves that while this is the end of Maurice’s physical life on Earth, it’s the beginning of an eternal and beautiful journey for him in Heaven.

Maurice was born on September 27, 1944, the eldest son of the late Orvil Hugh Hamilton and Corinne (Preston) Hamilton of West Union, OH, at the Portsmouth General Hospital. Growing up in Ohio, Maurice enjoyed his family, his faith, stamp collecting, watching sports, and automobiles. He was the basketball team’s scorekeeper all through high school. Maurice was intelligent and graduated Salutatorian from Jefferson High School in 1962. After high school, he attended Portsmouth Interstate Business College Portsmouth, Ohio. Upon graduation he began his Banking career in Portsmouth. Later he went to banking school in Wisconsin. He also worked at the radio station, WPAY Radio where he gave the weather report.

In 1968, Maurice met Carmen Adel Fittro, a match truly made in heaven. They wed on June 8, 1969, and had three sons. In 1980 Maurice accepted a position in product development and support at the Kirchman Corporation and moved his family to Altamonte Springs, Florida where he purchased a home in River Run South. Maurice spent the next 26 years at the Kirchman Corporation, a privately held banking software innovator, where he experienced much success and helped the company become a multi-national corporation that served over 6,000 banking institutions world-wide. Most people who write or deposit checks have their transactions handled by software created by the Kirchman Corporation. Some of Maurice’s fondest memories were from the popular annual company picnics and family trips held at Lake X, a 10,000-acre ranch and wildlife refuge south of Orlando where guests could camp, fish, boat, hike and spend quality time together.

Raising his family in Central Florida, his sons played little league baseball and Maurice loved to watch their games. Maurice also enjoyed golf, bowling, trips to the beach, and card games with family and friends. He was a travel enthusiast and traveled both for work and with his wife and family. Many summers, Maurice would take a sabbatical from work and take his family on an RV road trip. Maurice visited each of the 50 United States and over 40 international destinations. Maurice and Carmen both loved Walt Disney World and spent many years as annual passholders. He sponsored a Hamilton Family “Walk Around the World” commemorative brick near the entrance of the Magic Kingdom. In 2000, Maurice moved to Apopka and purchased a home in Rock Springs Ridge Golf & Country Club where he lived until he retired. He made friends with many of their neighbors and often hosted gatherings and celebrations. After he retired, he purchased an RV which was used for leisure, and later as a primary residence while he decided where he would next call home. In 2016, he decided on the vibrant community of Mount Dora and bought a home in the Mount Dora Country Club where he continued to be an active community member, play golf, and make new friends. Maurice continued to frequent his grandchildren’s baseball, softball and soccer games and took a cruise with his family just a few weeks before his passing.

Anyone who knew Maurice knew that he was the most loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather a family could ask for. Maurice was a force, determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. Maurice was a strong, kind, and supportive father. He was unendingly proud of his family, and it meant the world to him. His knowledge and guidance were a foundation for his family, and he taught his sons the importance of hard work and doing what is right. Maurice faced every challenge in life with admirable resolve. He was a true role model who will always be loved, respected and admired.

In the loving memory of our father, Maurice Lee Hamilton, who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Dad, you are now at peace, but you will live on forever in our hearts. We love you so much.
