Obituary
Melanie Wynn Mathis of New Smyrna Beach ran into the arms of God April 22, 2020 in Orlando, at the beautiful age of 65. She was born March 21, 1955 at Cross County Hospital in Wynne, AR. She spent much of her young life living between Wynne, AR. and Edgewater, FL. Melanie graduated from New Smyrna Beach High School in 1973; earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Stetson University in 1995 and a Master’s degree in Psychology from Arkansas State University in 2016. She had a love for animals especially horses and dogs. Melanie took the world head on and by storm. She accomplished many things in her beautiful life. She loved to learn, and it showed. Using her knowledge of re-bar construction, she opened Queen Steel, Inc. in the early 1980’s and as a minority in a male dominated field she didn’t back down. In the late 1980’s her company was tasked with putting the re-bar in for the North Causeway in New Smyrna Beach and parts of the Orlando International Airport. Next came All Florida Public Adjusters, Inc. which was Melanie’s way to help disasters survivors mediate with insurance companies. Melanie landed her dream job with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) where she has spent the past 5 years deploying to disasters as a Site Inspector Task Force Lead. Melanie will be remembered for her tenacity, zest for life, the kindness she showed to all she came into contact with, her independent nature and the love she gave to all who knew her. Her fighting spirit rages in all of us. Melanie is survived by 3 children: daughter Stephanie Peevey of New Smyrna Beach, sons Thomas West of New Smyrna Beach and Stephen Robinson unknown; 4 sisters: Marcia (Stan) Mitchell of Tallahassee, Jean (Gary) Nielson of Blemont, N.C., Mary (Ronnie) Hooker of Cotton Plant, AR. And Sarah (Rusty) Smith of Des Arc, AR.; 3 Grandchildren: Rex Peevey of New Smyrna Beach , Jake Robinson and Emma Robinson unknown; 4 nieces, 4 nephews, 3 great nieces and 2 great nephews. Melanie was proceeded in death by her mother Norma Rogers, stepfather Rex Rogers, father William Mathis, stepmother Vaughn Mathis and her grandparents.
