Obituary

Merrilynn (Smith) Fickell, age 78 passed away at home surrounded by family in Ocala, Florida
on May 17, 2022. Lynn as she liked to be called was born in Vero Beach, Florida on a Naval
Base in January of 1944. She is predeceased by her parents Hilton M Smith and Barbara
(Burlew) Smith and her sister Donna Smith. Lynn is survived by her husband Robert P Fickell
Jr. (Bob), sister, Tracy J. (Smith) Renke and her husband Bob, her three kids, Barbara J (Fickell)
Kinsey and husband Jon, Robert P Fickell III and wife Brenda and Jeffrey H Fickell. Lynn had 6
grandchildren who she enjoyed, Katherine, Chase, Tyler, Jack, Rachel, and Nick. Several
Cousins, Nieces and Nephews rounded out her beautiful life.

Lynn was a graduate of Upper Arlington High School in 1962 and attended The Ohio State
University for 2 years when she moved with her husband Bob to Bay Village in the Cleveland
area. She attended Lorain County Community College while in Bay Village and received her
Associates degree in Nursing. She started her Nursing career at the Cleveland Clinic. After a
few years in the Cleveland area, Lynn and Bob returned to Upper Arlington where she had a
career as an RN working in the neonatal intensive care unit at The Ohio State Medical Center
where she eventually retired after 25 years of service. Upon retirement, Bob and Lynn ventured
down to Ocala Florida where she continued to work part time in the newborn nursery at Munroe
Regional Medical Center until 2011. Lynn enjoyed reading, playing games & cards with family
and bowling on a team for a few years with co-workers. Also she spent time volunteering at The
Columbus Zoo as a docent where she loved hanging out with the penguins and was quick to
answer questions about them. Lynn loved her friends over the years and enjoyed the many
adventures they had together including a white water rafting trip, cruises and vacations up to
Crystal Lake in northern Michigan. Her spirit will remain strong among all of us who knew her
and she will always be in our memory.

I’m really sorry for your loss and I’ve been praying for your family. Winnie was truly a gem and I’m really sad to hear that she passed. I loved my conversations with her, playing dominos and will never forget when she had me brush her hair for an hour haha. I got to know her pretty well during that hour and loved that we shared a lot of similar interests. When I’m at Crystal Lake in a few weeks, I plan on having a moment of prayer in her honor since that’s the place I have only spent time with her. Hope you guys are all taking care. She will be missed.

  12. Barbara Genther (Steinkamp) says:

I am so sad to hear of Lynn’s death…
Lynn was the cousin who turned heads on the beach as a young woman visiting us on Long Beach Island, NJ; she had a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious laugh; she loved all her family and particularly vacationing with them all at Crystal Lake in Michigan; and I can only imagine how she must have made difficult nursing floors as much fun as they possibly could have been. Rest in peace now, dear cousin.
    Love, Barby
