Obituary

Michael K. Van Doren, 61, passed away at his home on Sunday, February 12. A beloved husband, son, father, brother and member of his community, Mike leaves an overwhelming void that those who love him will fill with the gratitude for having known him. Mike was a retired Lieutenant Commander of the United States Coast Guard and a retired Captain of American Airlines. His generosity, warmth and passion for life will be sorely missed.   An open-air service celebrating his life and legacy will be held on Thursday, February 16 at 5:00PM at the Bethune Beach "wall", 6651 S Atlantic Ave New Smyrna Beach, FL 32169.   A reception at the Clancy's Cantina annex building will follow.   Life Celebration will be 5:00 PM Thursday, February 16, 2012 at Bethune Beach Wall South Atlantic Avenue New Smyrna Beach.

    We are heartbroken at Mike's sudden death. Mike was always so warm and genuine. He was a family guy who loved Vicky and all of his and her family members. A good friend who always remained in touch with all of his flying buddies through the years. We knew Mike since Coast Guard Air Station Miami and remember as he and the entire crew began their airline careers. You will be missed our friend. Rhonda and Don McNiel

    Vicky, I am so sorry to hear about Mike. I am Christine and Jeff's friend from Boston and we saw you and Mike at the feast last summer. You both seemed like sure a wonderful couple. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

    My heartfelt sympathy to family and friends. I have great memories with Mike having served with him in the Army, Civilian and Coast Guard careers. He will be greatly missed.

    I'm very sorry to hear of Mike's sudden death. We previously knew each other at Coast Gaurd Air Station Miami/ Coast Guard Reserve Group Miami (FL) back in the 1980s.

    My heart goes out to Mike's family, especially Vicky, my Van Kleeck friend and "beach buddy" from years ago. You and Mike always seemed to be the perfect couple. I cannot imagine your pain and hope that great memories will somehow, one day, replace some of the hurt.
