Obituary
Michael John Nussbaum, son of Leonard and Elizabeth Nussbaum, was born on August 25, 1948, in Amarillo, Texas. The Lord, who called him to faith throughout his life, called him to Heaven on April 5, 2024, with his wife and children holding his hands as one of our church ministers came to read scripture and pray. Joyce, his wife of almost fifty years, asked the minister to find the verse that says, “Fear not….”. As our minister read Isaiah 41:10, in a moment of perfect peace, Mike quietly and without warning took his last breath of a life lived to the fullest. It was a moment filled with such grace that his family forever will be grateful to have witnessed.
The oldest of six brothers, four of whom survive him, and the son of devoted, hard-working parents, Mike learned early virtues to last a lifetime: faith, thrift, perseverance, and community involvement. He held a lifelong appreciation for healthy competition in sports, academics, constant learning, and public speaking and debate. He enjoyed success in business and industry, as well as community and leadership positions in Amarillo, Dallas, Knoxville, Memphis, and The Villages, Florida.
A native son of Amarillo, Texas, Mike obtained admittance to the only university to which he applied, the University of Notre Dame. Relishing every minute of college life, Mike became a never-ending fan with life-long involvement in the school, not only as a sports fan but also as the President of the Notre Dame Club of Memphis and as a member of the Alumni Senate. While at Notre Dame, Mike played intramural football for Dillon Hall and boxed with Bengal Bouts. From spending his sophomore year studying abroad in Innsbruck, Austria, lifelong Irish friendships would carry forward throughout his journey. Mike was so proud of his three children in many ways, one of which was also choosing to share his love of the university as each also graduated from Notre Dame. Go Irish!
Mike voluntarily chose to serve his country, enlisting in ROTC while in school. After serving in the U.S. Army and while serving in the Army Reserves, Mike attended graduate school at the University of Texas and met Rosalind Joyce Turner, the love of his life. Mike and Joyce began their lives together, with Mike’s career evolving through public accounting, oil and gas ventures, land development, and eventually, tire distribution and real estate businesses. Well known for his business acumen, many sought him out to serve on various boards and councils.
Mike was an honest and ethical businessman, a caring friend, a loving father and Opa, and a devoted husband and faithful Christian. Mike is survived by Joyce Turner Nussbaum, his beloved wife, business partner, and dear companion of fifty years, and their children: Michael (Judy) Nussbaum of Atlanta, Natalie Nussbaum of Chicago, Alexis Nussbaum of Memphis, and three granddaughters, Ella, Katie, and Julianna, as well as a host of family members and friends far and wide around the country, but always close at heart.
Throughout his battle with pancreatic cancer, which began in late 2022, Mike’s family and friends walked every step of the way with him. They prayed with him and for him, cared for him, kept watch over him, and loved him to the end. He went from their arms into the arms of Christ, and there he remains forever. His family will be forever grateful for the exceptional care at Villages Health Center, Shands Davis Cancer Center, the University of Florida Villages Hospital, and Cornerstone Hospice House and his constant prayer vigils with pastors and friends at Village View Community Church.
Mike Nussbaum’s Celebration of Life will be Saturday, April 27, 10:30-11:30 a.m., following visitation from 9:30-10:30 at Village View Community Church, 8585 SE 147th Place, Summerfield, FL 34491. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Village View Community Church or to Knoxville Inner City Kids Outreach (KICKO), both near and dear to Mike’s heart.
Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.
