Obituary
Orville James Mitchell, Jr., a resident of Longwood, FL, died peacefully at his home on October 11, 2021.
“O.J.” was born on July 17, 1948, in Paducah, Kentucky, to Orville James Mitchell, Sr., and Opal Yancy Mitchell, of Arlington, KY.
He was a graduate of Carlisle County High School, Bardwell, KY, where he was on the basketball team and student government.
He received his Bachelor’s of Science Degree from the University of Central Florida; a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from Rollins College, and a Doctoral Degree in Secondary Education Administration and Supervision from Florida State University.
He was an educator in both public and private schools, a fundraiser for Christian schools and charter schools across the State of Florida, an avid supporter of home-schooling, and was active in Republican politics.
He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball, Kentucky Wildcats basketball and Florida State football.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Vanda Davis Mitchell; son, Brian Mitchell (Kelli) of Mt. Dora, FL; daughter, Sarah Tice (Andrew) of Fuquay Varina, NC; six grandchildren, Noah, Jonah, Benjamin, Maddie, Hannah, and Micah; and sister, Lacy Liles, Reidland, KY.
In his final weeks, he and his family were incredibly blessed by the services provided by VITAS Hospice Care. The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to VITAS or the hospice of choice.
