Obituary

Patricia Lorene Caylor Gruber was born on June 6, 1934, in Tazewell, Tennessee and grew up in Lafayette, Indiana where she graduated from Jefferson High School in 1952. Lorene married Joseph John Gruber on August 3, 1952. She was a homemaker and together they raised four children. In 1967 Joe and Lorene moved to Lexington, Kentucky.

Lorene was a member of the University of Kentucky International Friendship Program and made lifelong friends. She worked at the student services at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing for five years. She was a member of the Lexington Quilt Guild.  Lorene taught sewing and quilting for 38 years and won many blue ribbons for her quilts. Mom said she made over 300 quilts.  In 1999 she had the honor to make the Celebration Quilt for the opening of the Kentucky History Center in Frankfort, Kentucky.

She was a mother who delighted in her children and made each of us feel exceptional. Her specialties were children’s parties, wonderful meals and playing with us, always being fiercely protective and loving.

She is survived by her husband Joseph, her three sisters, Virginia Buttry, Linda Sue Kerber and Louise Mitchell and her four children Cathy Matthews, Jody Loeffen, Mike Gruber and Jay Gruber, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

We love you mom, Lorene, grandma, sister…. We have nothing but fond memories. Keep on quilting mama, keep on quilting.
