Obituary

Richard passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at age 84 with his wife by his side.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joanne E. Cushing, and his four children Jennifer (Tony), Jeanne (Kelly), Janet (Taylor), and James (Kelly).

He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren, Allison, Elizabeth, Andrew, Jack, Katherine, and Ethan.

He was preceded in death by his parents James W. and Alice Cushing, and his two younger brothers, Robert (Anne) and David (Susan).

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts on September 19, 1933, and grew up in Quincy, Massachusetts. He graduated from North Quincy High School in 1951.

He studied chemical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, class of 1955, before joining the Navy, in which he served from March 11, 1955 until February 11, 1961.

His career required frequent travel to many parts of the world. His children especially looked forward to his return from travel oversees, and the special souvenirs and stories he would bring back with him.  He served as Vice President of Kevex Corporation and then as a Vice President of Nicolet Instrument Corporation.

After retiring, he and Joanne moved to Florida. Prior to that, the family lived in San Mateo, California, Waterloo, Belgium and Madison, Wisconsin.

He married Joanne on February 15, 1969, and they began to grow their family with the birth of their first child in 1971.

Richard was a lover of animals, especially the rescue greyhounds he and his wife adopted. He was a long-term volunteer for Greyhound Pets of America. He also loved travel and photography, even developing his own prints in his home darkroom.

Richard will be remembered for his kindness, his strong work ethic, his devotion to his wife of nearly 49 years, and his corny jokes.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Richard to Greyhound Pets of America.

Funeral Mass will be 8:30 AM, Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church 4673 Clyde Morris Boulevard Port Orange PO 32129.

I worked with Dick at Kevex. His guidance made a lasting impact on my career and my life for which I am ever grateful. I recall one meeting in Japan with Dick and the worldwide marketing manager for an electron microscope manufacturer. Without benefit of notes the two gentlemen conversationally visited sales reps around the world through Europe, South Africa, Asia and the Americas. It was amazing.

I met the Cushings at Jeanne's wedding. He no doubt was a wonderful father having parented such lovely daughters.
