Obituary

Shirley (Kuykendall) Layman, 80, of Ft Myers, Florida & Louisville, Kentucky  passed away on Friday, May 7, 2021.

She was born on November 18, 1940 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Charles & Margaret Kuykendall.  The family moved to Louisville, Kentucky during her early teens. She is also preceded in death by her husband Walter Layman.

She was a wonderful, loving Mom, Coy, Gram, GiGi, Sister, Aunt and Friend.  She enjoyed family, making jewelry, painting and raising butterflies.  She was a compassionate woman who donated time to the OSTEGO BAY FOUNDATION, where she developed a love for the sea life, plant life and wildlife in the Ft Myers area.

She is survived by her brother, Ray Kuykendall, her children, Catherine (Phil) Bremer,  Kimberly Smith, Kendall Bagwell, Karen (John) Hansgen, Travis (Alisha) Layman.  Her Grandchildren, Joel (Danielle) Bagwell, Austin Layman, Jacob (Jennifer) Bagwell, Kelsey Bagwell, Katelyn Hansgen, Jared Bagwell and Kassidee Hansgen.  Her Great Grandchildren, Peyton, Jackson, Ryleigh, Evelyn and Juliette.  Nieces Bree, Makayla and Kareena.

A private family memorial is planned for a later date.  In lieu of flowers the family has asked donations be made to:

    Aunt Shirley, You gave me soooo many great childhood memories, that I share with my kids and grandkids... Gatlinburg , Ft Meyers Beach trips every year... Pretty much raised me in the summer, she never made me go home, I stayed for weeks at a time. The 2nd mom, a great mom, she allowed KJ & I to stay close when she didn't have to... she wanted that for us... She always made me laugh, she was full of life and taught me to have a little fire in my veins. Her spirit was amazing, her heart was huge and she lived life the way she wanted, on her terms, I admired her, I loved her... She was a very special soul and one of a kind... god gained a special angel, lots of hugs, love and prayers to Kitty, Kim, Kindall, KJ & Travis along with the rest of her beautiful family, I know she is watching over each and every one of you . She has and will continue to be in my heart forever.

    Shirley always had a smiling face and twinkle in her eye!! We were colleagues at the science center and became fast friends as for the love of nature and teaching. Always up to a quick smile and giggle she was quite an artist and crafter of superior talent! Afraid of “dark water” the memory of Shirley on Phil’s pontoon is priceless as she was splashed and couldn’t stop laughing for the entire cruise!!! Well Shirley, your cruise is finished here but I know you will continue your love where the Lord has created a way for you, Sail on my friend ! Love to all

    This woman will be painfully missed. She was a force of nature, and a dear friend. I always knew if Shirley was there, it was going to be a good time. She made me feel welcome from the moment I met her. I am happy to know her love lives on in her family, who are amazing people. Many prayers, much love. Miss you, Shirley.
