Obituary

Stewart B. Harkness, Smilin Stew, A Peaceful Warrior died February 29, 2024. Stew was born September 14, 1929, in Drexel Hill, PA.
He attended Upper Darby High School, Drexel Hill, PA, the Haverford Prep school in Haverford PA, Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, and received his masters degree at Temple University.
Stew was an outstanding athlete, in both football and basketball. He was awarded positions on the All-Inter academic football and basketball teams and was given considerable publicity in the Philadelphia newspapers.
He spent 30 years in various positions at Palmyra High School in New Jersey, as a teacher, coach and guidance director. Upon retirement he and his wife, Rosa, counseled in the evening program at Palmyra High School.
He is a direct descendent of an American revolutionary officer. His hobbies were genealogy in which he wrote many papers on family history. He liked to read Shakespeare plays. He was president of the Friends of Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, PA. He also wrote a book about the cemetery and those that are buried there.
Stewart and Rosa moved to Daytona Beach, Florida in 1992, and became active in volunteering at the Port Orange YMCA, the Museum of Arts and Sciences and the Daytona Beach International Airport.
