Obituary

Surrounded by the immense love and comfort of her family, Susan Louise Curcio (Knestrick), aged 82, passed away peacefully at her home in New Smyrna Beach, Fl on April 7, 2024. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend – curating thoughtfulness and care so easily and freely to those lucky enough to cross her path. Some of her most treasuring legacies she leaves behind include her humility and grace, love of a good belly laugh, and an appetite for Dairy Queen hot dogs.

Born on October 1, 1941 in Washington, PA, Susan was the daughter of James Chester Knestrick and Mary Clare (Collins). With both her parents coming from large families, Susan and her siblings grew up valuing family and the importance of nurturing those relationships. A lifelong humanitarian, she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from George Mason University in 1962 and worked in multiple hospitals and facilities during her 41 year nursing career along the East Coast. In retirement, she continued her service to her community, and those in need, through her volunteer work with the American Red Cross and more recently, Keep NSB Clean Crew, a local beach clean-up group.

A lover of crossword puzzles, outfit repeating and a good book – Susan was an extroverted introvert who always knew when to leave a conversation, never one to linger. She had an appreciation for the theatre and arts, animals, and a sweet treat. Embracing Earths beauty, her hobbies included biking, hiking, kayaking, and watching sunrises. She spent her life traveling the world – near and far, with her closest friends and family; from climbing mountains and riding camels to visiting national parks and touring historical landmarks, she relived her adventures countless times with each story she shared.

Susan was kind with a side of zest. Her exemplary life inspires us to serve others and live life fully. She gave so much love while we had her here. it will carry us through our lifetime(s).

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons; Vincent John Curcio III (Christine) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and James Christopher Curcio of Washington DC; her brother and best friends, Joe Knestrick (Janice) of New Smyrna Beach, Fla and her dear cousin and best friend, Mary Ellen Jewusiak of Williamsburg, VA. She was a beloved Grandma to Amy, Rachel, Kasey, Isabela, Sofia, and Mya, an Aunt to Brady, Mary, Brittany and nephews, and a sweet friend and neighbor to many.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to https://donate.cancer.org/ or https://www.redcross.org/

Such sad news. I worked with Susan for many years at Kaiser Falls Church Urgent Care. Susan was an exemplary nurse and always had a smile and a laugh to make the evenings more pleasant. I always think of Susan with her courage and perseverance with breast cancer and then giving back by doing the breast cancer walk. She touched so many lives in such a positive way and I feel fortunate to have known her and worked with her. With deepest condolences on your loss.

It was so good to know Susan as a neighbor and friend starting in the early 1970’s.

Our children played together and went to school together.
Greeting and condolences to Vince and Chris.

    Reconnecting in recent
years has been a gift and a blessing.

With love from the O’Toole family
