Obituary

Chapin, Sylvia Dee, 73 of New Smyrna Beach passed away Friday, December 30, 2016.  Sylvia (better known as Dee) was born on August 28, 1943 in St. Augustine, FL to the late William D. and Bessie L. McCullough of New Smyrna Beach.  Living briefly in Miami, Dee spent most of her life in New Smyrna Beach.  Dee graduated from New Smyrna Beach High School Class of 1961 and was voted the “Most Friendly” of her class.  This carried throughout her life as she was always thoughtful and caring of others.  Dee was involved in her children’s school activities.  She was team mom for the SEVAA football team for four years and cheerleading coach for SEVAA for seven years.  Dee first worked for Tumblin Insurance Agency out of high school and later she was co-owner of Home Furniture and Edgewater Cabinets.  After marrying her present husband, Robert she briefly retired, but went back to work at Walmart for ten years retiring as a managers assistant.  Dee later volunteered as a Pink Lady at Bert Fish Hospital for six more years.  She and her husband, traveled extensively throughout the states, Alaska, Europe and made a few cruises.  She was always active and enjoyed playing golf with her husband and girlfriends.  Dee also liked to fish and was very patient.  Even if the fish were biting or not.  She cherished her grandchildren and was always there for them when needed and had the patience of Job.  Dee is survived by her loving husband, of 32 years, Marine LtCol Robert W. Chapin; son, David Postlethwait, Daytona Beach; daughter, Teresa Postlethwait Cameron, Eureka, CA; brother, Marshall McCullough, Edgewater; stepson, Bill and his wife, Marianne Chapin; stepdaughter, Jeanie and her husband, Clifford Lomax; grandsons, Robert Grooms, Jr, Tommy Cameron and Shane Cameron and numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren.  The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Regency ALF, Bini and her staff for their loving care of Dee the last five years of her debilitating illness.   A gathering of family and friends will be held Wednesday, January 4, 2017 from 5-7PM at Baldwin Brothers Heritage Place, 1 N. Causeway, New Smyrna Beach.  Graveside services will be 10AM, Thursday, January 5th at Edgewater-New Smyrna Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations to VITAS Hospice.

To Dee's loving family, and especially Bob, I send my heartfelt condolences. I have only known Bob for a year and a half but he has told me so many stories about Dee. I know her love and bright spirit lives on with your family.
