Obituary

On Thursday, July 21, 2022, Valerie Carmen Berch, loving wife and mother and grandmother, passed away at age 76. Valerie was born on October 24, 1945, in Groton, Connecticut to Loren E. and Mercedes C. Hurley. Although she held numerous jobs throughout her life, she was particularly proud of her work in pharmacovigilance at AstraZeneca and organizing scientific conferences and board meetings at AOAC International. She loved gardening, cooking, and working around the house. An avid viewer of home, garden, and cooking TV channels and reader of such magazines, she possessed both a deep and wide-ranging knowledge of these topics. She was considered by her family members and close friends as being strong, resilient, and stellar classy. She also had a quick wit and was a real stickler for using correct grammar. Most importantly, she was a very loving wife and mother and a truly supportive friend.

In addition to raising her biological daughter and having two grandchildren, she was especially loved and admired by her three “bonus” children. She is survived by her husband, Dan, her daughter, Sondra (& Mike) Kehne, her grandchildren, Evan and Zoey Hoover and bonus grandson Eyan Coley, and her bonus children, Randa (& Sammy) Samson, Sarah (& John) DiBisceglie, and Darren Berch, as well as her other bonus grandchildren. Baldwin Brothers Funeral & Cremation Society, Tavares, FL, will be assisting the family with the arrangements, which are private.

This is Valerie Hurley at age 20. We were teenagers together, growing up in Groton, Connecticut. Valerie was exceptionally good a being a true friend; she was kind, generous, unfailingly loving, and brought a warm sense of witty humor to situations that others might be tempted to ignore. To know her was to realize that her exquisite physical beauty extended to soul depth.

Valerie Hurley Berch was one of the most memorable of my friends. I knew her in our high school years and for years after that. She and her sister, Georgiamarie, and their mother, Mrs. Mercedes Hurley, made me feel like one of their own--always welcome to their home, and most important, always welcome in their lives. Her beauty was stunning and she wore it without apology; I admired that about her. That self-understanding left her free to navigate all her relationships with an unfettered heart. She was gracious in demeanor and unfailingly kind. She was resilient. Valerie was a timeless friend. She is heaven's gain.
Signing off as "Buttons" Peterson, the name she always called me; my childhood nickname.

Val was a wonderful friend. She was there when you needed someone to listen and someone to laugh with. Whether it was good or bad news, I’d want to share it with her. She had a refreshing honesty. She was caring, bold, with an outrageous sense of humor. A true force of nature. Knowing her enriched my life in so many ways, and I will miss my buddy terribly.
