Obituary
Kevin D. McSweeney of Port Charlotte, FL, formerly of Waltham Dorchester, MA passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 14, 2025 from Esophageal Cancer. He is survived by his sister and best friend, Judi McSweeney of Port Charlotte, FL. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Daniel F. McSweeney and Myrtis (Timoney) McSweeney of Waltham, MA., grandparents, Stanley Barber, Josephine Barber, and Julia McSweeney (O’Gallaghan) of Bennington, VT.
Kevin was diagnosed 6 months prior to his passing and decided not to pursue treatment. Kevin stayed with his sister Judi McSweeney, until his passing, while on hospice care. Kevin grew up in North Waltham, MA where he loved playing with his closest friends, Pete, Joe, Fig, David, and Charlie, all throughout his grade school years. He also enjoyed hunting for snakes and frogs, building forts, riding bikes, and skiing down the back of Church Hill. In Junior High, Kevin and his best friend, Charlie, decided to start a band that they named Full House. They practiced in the McSweeney’s cellar, and over time became so good that they drew in a large following. The band was ultimately made up of Kevin, his two late friends Charlie and Jay, Aldo, Mike, and later added a second drummer by the name of Joe, giving the band 2 drummers. They entered a contest in the 9th Grade against a group of seniors and ended up winning. They got to play at Uncle Sam’s on Nantucket Beach, but over the course of time the band ultimately broke up and everyone went their separate ways.
Kevin attended a year at Wentworth Institute and a year at Sylvania Tech School. He later started his own roofing company and enjoyed being his own boss, as he was not a fan of regularly working the normal 9-5 hours. In his spare time, Kevin was either making butcher block tables as his second business.
Kevin was very kind, generous, and always enjoyed helping people. He had a great, but sometimes dark sense of humor. He also liked to swim for relaxation, go out on his dad’s boat to see the fireworks at Esplanade every 4th of July. He also liked following tall ships through the Charles River Harbor while visiting, as it was a family tradition. Kevin and his sister experienced a wonderful childhood, filled with family vacations to Florida, New Hampshire, Cape Cod, and deep-sea fishing trips.
Kevin permanently moved to Florida in October 2016 to help Judi care for their mother, who had unfortunately came down with Dementia and Alzheimer’s. Following their mother’s passing 3 months later, he decided to stay in Florida with his sister who shortly after became ill. In the following years, it became apparent that Kevin’s health was beginning to decline as well, but he was reluctant to go to the doctors. His sister was so upset about him not putting his own health first, that she had to threaten him to move out if he didn’t seek medical attention. He finally agreed to receive medical assistance, but unfortunately his illness had progressed too far.
His sister, Judi McSweeney, would like to express her deepest gratitude to everyone who has assisted her during this extremely difficult time. Kevin’s childhood best friend, David Halstead, who always stayed in touch throughout the years, Lisa, at Tidewell Hospice for all her compassion and assistance in the direct medical care of Kevin. Judi’s dearest friends, Arliette, Carol, and Dotty for all their help in making Kevin’s final weeks at home the best and most comfortable possible, and to Lisa and Mary for always checking in. Lisa Gala for helping Kevin when he went to Waltham to sell the house when Judi was unable to make the trip, Roy, his wife, and daughter for always being there to assist with maintaining the house, yard work, and helping during the floods due to the Hurricanes that came through Southwest Florida. Another thank you to Johnny 7 Cab for taking Kevin to all his doctor’s appointments and being such a good friend. Judi will be forever grateful for the selflessness bestowed by you all.
Kevin Fogg, Joe Guidebeck and I still get together, we share stories from the “old “ days and Kev is always part of the stories. We have so many good memories of the neighborhood.
I hope he did not suffer too much, but I am sure he is in a better place now. You will be in my thoughts and prays and we will certainly continue to share our stories together remembering the times we spent together.
Peter
