Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Darla Berg, on Saturday, September 6, 2025, of natural causes.

To her children, she was simply Mom—caring, endlessly loving, and always ready to spoil us in any way she could. She was our safe place, our comfort, and our greatest supporter. As we grew older, we were blessed to know her not only as a mother, but also as a remarkable woman in her own right. Her quick wit, sarcastic humor, and boundless heart brought light to every room she entered. She never judged, never turned her back, and even as years passed, she continued to show her love in countless small ways.

To know Darla was to feel warmth, compassion, and an unwavering kindness. She had flaws, as we all do, but it was her authenticity and her heart that made her truly extraordinary. She made life brighter simply by being part of it.

Darla was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Kathleen Berg; her husband, Greg Karagas; and her brother, Doug Berg.

She is survived by her children, Nicholas Diaz-Serrano, Raymond Hefel, and Andrew Hefel; her grandchildren, Riley Hefel, Mia Diaz, Bailey Diaz, Jameson Diaz, Landon Sutton, Jocelyn Hefel, and Lakelyn Hefel; and her siblings, David Berg, Duana Berg, Dana Berg, Darrell Berg, and Denise Berg. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and many dear friends whose lives were touched by her love.

Arrangements have been made in accordance with her wishes. She will be cremated, and her ashes will be released in Key West, Florida, a place of beauty and peace that she cherished. No services will be held at this time, but a celebration of life will take place on a future date so that family and friends may gather in her honor.

Though the world feels emptier without her laughter and presence, her love will forever live on in the lives she touched. We hope everyone who knew her will honor her memory in the way she would have wanted most—by loving deeply, showing kindness, and carrying her spirit forward.

    Mom,

It’s hard to accept that I can’t just pick up the phone and call you anymore. You were my rock—the strongest, smartest, and yes, the “bestest” mom in the world (and I know you’d smile at me saying it that way).

You will be missed by so many, but no one will feel that loss more deeply than I do. I will love you always, and I will miss you every single day.
