Obituary
John Alan “Big John” Schneider entered eternal rest on September 20, 2025, just two weeks
shy of his 80th birthday. A private celebration of life will be held in Charleston, S.C., where his
ashes will be placed in the salt marsh of Gray Bay; the same waters where his daughter, Holly,
has chosen to one day join him.
Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on October 4, 1945, John was the cherished son of Phyllis
“Dolly” J. Wood. He graduated from Florida State University and proudly served his country as a
member of the United States Marine Corps.
The water was John’s truest home. An avid and award-winning saltwater fisherman, he was
even more celebrated as Captain of his C&C 50, Insanity, the most decorated racing sailboat in
the Fort Lauderdale area during its prime. His competitive spirit and mastery of the sea earned
him countless titles; but even more importantly, lifelong friendships and stories that continue to
ripple through those who sailed with him.
On land, John brought that same energy and generosity to his work managing restaurants in
Fort Lauderdale, including Yesterdays, the Wildflower, and Casablanca. To many, those
establishments were not just restaurants but gathering places shaped by his presence. He
treated colleagues like family, leaving behind a community of friends who remain bonded by his
larger-than-life spirit.
A true force of nature, John’s heart was as big as his frame, and once, as bold as his mustache.
A lifelong athlete and health enthusiast, he pushed himself and others to live stronger. He lifted
heavier weights, ran farther miles, and inspired friends by buying them gym memberships so
they could join him. When running gave way to walking, he logged ten miles a day, often
pausing to gently move fallen wildlife from busy roads, offering them dignity in death. His
compassion extended to the dogs he loved most; Gizmo, Cody, and Lucky, who were his faithful
companions.
John is survived by his sister, Nancy R. Bolton of Ocala; his daughter, Holly Hanson Blair of
Charleston; and his two granddaughters, Clara Wesley Blair and Mariana Helen Blair, the lights
of his life. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Wesley Culver Schneider, in 2004.
A devoted father, brother, grandfather, and friend, John will be missed beyond measure. His
family takes comfort in knowing he is now sailing in calm waters, forever grateful for the storms
that gave his journey such meaning.
Baldwin Brothers Funeral and Cremation Society is honored to assist with final arrangements.
I’ll be forever grateful to you for introducing me to gym life (thank you for all the memberships to LHP Athletic Club) and showing me the path…my original Gym Bro.
I pray you are spending your time sailing in peace or driving that Porsche 928 S4 or AMG Merc to your heart’s content. We would have had so much in common had we stayed in contact.
Rest in peace Legend
RIP John
