Obituary

Jemima (Hochstetler) Detweiler, 83, of Port Charlotte, Florida, passed away unexpectedly on September 24, 2025. She was born on May 4, 1942, in Massillon, Ohio, to the late Harvey and Iva Hochstetler.

Jemima’s greatest joy was being a daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. A hard worker all her life, she faithfully provided for her children and loved her family deeply. She had a generous heart, often giving and receiving gifts as a way of expressing her love. Later in life, she came to know the saving grace and love of Jesus Christ, which became the foundation of her faith and her peace.

She was musically talented, self-taught on both the harmonica and accordion, and found joy in sharing her music with others. Jemima also loved fishing, reading, playing bingo, crocheting,  and in recent years took up painting and she loved to laugh.

She is survived by her children, Tamara (Donnie) Oswald of Bunker Hill, Ohio; Stephan (Ernalene) Schrock of Mansfield, Ohio; Shona (Dennis) Miller of Port Charlotte, Florida; and Darlene (Todd) Mast of Mansfield, Ohio. She was the proud grandmother of eight and great-grandmother of eight, with one precious great-grandchild waiting to welcome her in heaven.

Jemima is also survived by her siblings, Elva Sommers of Hartville, Ohio; Malinda Kurtz of Hartville, Ohio; LydiaAnn Miller of Millersburg, Ohio; Mable (Jonas) Sommers of Sarasota, Florida; Harvey Hochstetler Jr. of Sugarcreek, Ohio; and Barbara (Larry) Oswald of Killbuck, Ohio as well as her Brother-in-law Alvin Yoder of Sarasota, Florida, sister-in-law Kathy Hochstetler of Mogadore, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Levi Hochstetler, Herman Hochstetler, and Esther Yoder as well as her sisters-in-law Esther Hochstetler and JoAnn Hochstetler.

She will be remembered for her warm heart, her faith, her love of music, and the joy she found in life. Jemima leaves behind a legacy of resilience, and love that will live on in her family and friends.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., followed by her celebration of life service at 2:30 p.m. at Bedrock Sarasota Church (Southside Baptist Church), 2035 Magnolia Street, Sarasota, Florida.

Jemima is my aunt and I have spent many holidays and family occasions with her. She was there at my wedding and when my son Zac was born. She had a big personality and many times had me laughing so hard I would cry. She was a support to our family always and I will miss her so very much
