Obituary

Mary Jane Moeller (née Hughes) of The Villages, Florida, entered the Lord’s service gently and peacefully at Cornerstone Hospice on January 5th, 2026, at the age of 82.

Mary Jane was born in New York City on April 12, 1943, to Annette Cecilia (Morgan) Hughes and Mark Fabian Hughes. She was educated at the Convent of the Sacred Heart on 91st St. and graduated from Manhattanville College in 1964.  She completed a Masters’ degree at the Teachers College of Columbia University and spent her career in elementary education in New York and New Jersey before retiring to Florida. She was a communicant at St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church in Lady Lake, FL.  Mary Jane is survived by Peter, her devoted husband of 57 years; her sister Annette (Toni) Hillary of Denver, CO; her daughter Suzanne and son-in-law Steven Quintavalla of Branchburg, NJ; and her grandson John Paul.  She was preceded in death by her parents and by brothers Mark, Jr., and John Joseph.

Mary Jane was a classy lady who could set an amazing table for a party and liven it up with her sharp wit and devious sense of humor.  She was a talented and caring teacher for a generation of children as well as a skilled writer and a tough editor, and she banged her expertise into her daughter and son-in-law’s heads, where it continues to serve them well.  She cheered fiercely for the Brooklyn Dodgers in her youth and all her life for the New York Football Giants, whose recent record may have been responsible for her heart failure.  She was a no-holds-barred player of card games and Rummikub; triumphant in victory and gracious in defeat.

She loved her family and friends without hesitation and welcomed them with open arms and homemade cookies.

Services held for Mary Jane will be private.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care, or to The Villages Philharmonic OrchestraArrangements entrusted with BALDWIN BROTHERS Funeral & Cremation Society-Spanish Springs, 352-430-1449.  Sentiments are encouraged at www.baldwincremation.com.
