Robert Woody McMillan

September 9, 1936

April 15, 2020

He was born in Richmond, VA to the late C.H. and Anne W. McMillan. Bob shared time with his Uncle Henry Woody owner of Henry Woody Funeral Homes. Robert (known by friends and loved ones as Bob) attended Massanutten Military Academy as a boy, School of Henry Longfellow as a teen, and Beaverton High School as a graduate in 1954.

Bob attended Stanford University in 1955 with a perfect entrance score and received a degree in Philosophy. There he joined the Kappa Sigma Beta-Zeta Fraternity. His other degrees at Richmond, VA. include a B.A. in Business and Economics in 1964, a Mortuary Science Degree in Los Angeles, California in 1961. At Denver University he obtained a Masters Degree in Business Administration, and joined Kappa Sigma Beta-Zeta again He met his best lifetime friend Rodger Husbands in Denver, Colorado in 1971.

Bob’s greatest job was entering the Army in 1956, serving as a soldier in the Airborne Special Forces (10th Special Team) as a Parachutist – Marksman (rifle) – Sharpshooter (pistol). Meeting other best friends which included the late Norbert and Sara Weber and Bob’s late wife Karola Wessel as well as her sister the late Ingrid, and brother in law John Creel who was a lifetime friend and comrade.

Bob and Karola would cherish life while raising their two daughters Regina and Ingrid McMillan. With the loss of Karola, Bob was left to raise his daughters who are now successful, and who both reside in Colorado.

Bob took up residence in Vail, Colorado where he owned a local restaurant called The Silver Buckle. He also owned a paint and furniture store called McMillan Furnishings in Eagle – Vail, Colorado.

Bob married again in 1986 to Linda, and raised son Kristopher Hardy. In 1988 Bob would go to Hawaii and attend a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marine School as a Radar Observer. Bob took his wife Linda McMillan and son Kristopher Hardy to visit longtime friend Rupert Oberlhor and George Weidman who was his best man. They moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida in 1989. While in Florida Bob joined the local Fire Station  #21 as a volunteer, completing an EMT degree, and receiving Fire Fighter of the year award in 1990 and 1991.

He enjoyed woodworking with his friend Willie Glassbrenner. Bob was proud of his portfolio of special furniture that he made. These accomplishments included bookshelves, entertainment centers, a conference table for President Ford, molds for Boston Whaler, and the design for a long-board skateboard named “The Woody” for Orion Surfboards.

Bob was a member of Moose-lodge and the Boat & Ski Club of New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

He enjoyed watching his children play soccer, and could be found on a soccer field, or at a game 5 days a week for many years. He was there with his children watching from 1991-2020.

Most importantly Bob was a kind, caring man, and will be greatly missed by his loving wife Linda. His daughter Regina (John) Buxman, and their children Arianna, and Stefan Buxman of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. His daughter Ingrid McMillan Ernst and her daughters Karina and Helena Ernst of Loveland, Colorado. Son Bryan (Robyn) Norman of Pelham, Alabama. Daughter Elizabeth Norman of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Son Stephen Norman of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. His son Kristopher Hardy of Westminster, Colorado. He leaves behind his beloved grandchildren – Taylor McMillan, Daniel McMillan, Caitlyn McMillan, Brysen McMillan, Aiden Hardy, Alexander Norman, Madison Willis, and Kristen Melton, and his great-grandchildren – Kamdyn and Karsyn. Bob also leaves behind his niece Lola, his nephew Gregory (Jaye) Creel, and grandnephews Ethan and Darren Creel.

Bob loved his Blessed life

We are grateful to have shared life with him.

We plan to have a “Swim-Out” on Sunday, July 12, 2020 at 1:00pm at Hiles Boulevard and a gathering at 4610 Van Kleeck Drive New Smyrna Beach, Florida immediately following. On Monday, July 13, 2020 at 10:00am we will place the ashes at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery at 5525 US-1, Mims, Florida 32754, full military honors will be performed.
