Obituary
William R. Forbes
December 16, 1932 – June 6, 2021
William “Bill” Forbes of Mount Dora, FL died June 6, 2021 peacefully at home. A native of St. Paul, MN, Bill attended Macalester College and Northwestern Prep prior to receiving his appointment to the Naval Academy from Rep. (later Sen.) Eugene J. McCarthy. He graduated with distinction in 1955. Go Navy!
Upon commissioning, Bill served two years aboard a Newport-based destroyer, followed by a productive (and enjoyable) tour on staff, as Commander US Naval Forces Philippines. After leaving active duty, he returned to the Philippines for employment in the desiccated coconut industry.
Bill ultimately returned to the U.S. and assumed a lengthy career with the Du Pont Company in Wilmington, DE. He specialized in the sales/marketing of Freon® fluorocarbon products. His travels took him to 62 countries where he formed many life-long friendships. His wife, Beth, often accompanied him and they explored many notable sites not often visited by tourists.
During retirement, Bill and his wife particularly enjoyed their month-long trips to Scotland (ancestral home) where they immersed themselves in lawn bowling, golf, Mount Dora, FL/Royal Burgh of Forres, Scotland sister city activities and sightseeing.
Bill is survived by his soul mate, Elizabeth “Beth”, his two children, Catherine Forbes (Phil Watkins) and William “Bill” Forbes (Carolyn) and two grandchildren (Cameron and Michelle). He was preceded in death by parents Russell and Mabel Forbes.
Interment of cremains will be at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL at a later date. A Celebration of Life gathering will take place in the future.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution be made to the Mount Dora Fire Department (1300 N. Donnelly St., Mount Dora, FL 32757), Cornerstone Hospice Foundation (2445 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778), or your favorite charitable organization.
