Obituary
Shirley Lee Williams Shafer, 86, of Orlando passed away on June 14th, 2023. She was born May 27, 1937 in Wise, Virginia.
Shirley grew up in Big Stone Gap, VA and graduated from Big Stone Gap High School in 1956. She worked in Orlando in her early years at Martin Marietta in the 1950’s and later spent over 30 years with State Farm Insurance.
After retiring, Shirley moved to a Dr Phillips community where she fondly became nicknamed “the Mayor” due to her unique ability to connect deeply with so many in the neighborhood as they passed by her front door. Shirley had a quick wit and could always be counted on to assist where needed.
Shirley was preceded in death by her sisters and brothers. She is survived by her son, Robert Shafer and her many loving nephews and nieces, particularly her niece Brenda Dorton and her family who were always very close to Shirley.
Shirley had a passion for animals, specifically for her dogs and helping others with their four legged friends. She spent countless hours dispensing treats to neighbors’ dogs and lending a kind ear to those who came and shared their stories.
