Obituary

Andy Fox, age 65, of Winter Park, Florida, passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2023.  He was born in Hammond, IN on March 16, 1958 and grew up in Munster, IN where he attended Munster High School and had a decorated golfing career.  He was a four year letterman at Munster H.S. in golf and two year letterman in Basketball.  Andy was on the All-Lake County Suburban Conference Golf Team multiple years and made the Indiana All-State Men’s Golf Team.  He won the 1973 Times Junior Golf Tournament with lifelong friend Pete “Rocco” Lanman finishing 3rd.  Andy was runner-up in 1975 to lifelong friend Tim “Boo” Budreau.  He qualified for the 1974 US JR Amateur Championship at Brooklawn Country Club with lifelong friend Scott Vidimos.  His Senior Year at Munster H.S. he lead a team that finished 22-0 in regular season play.   He also won the 1981 Hammond Times Open in a playoff against a US Postman with Pete “Peewee” Grompone on the bag.  Andy graduated from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL with a bachelor’s degree in Economics.  He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and was big brother to Royce Imhoff.

After graduating from Rollins College, he went back to Munster for a few years to work with the family business, Viking Engineering.  Following his brother “June Dog”, he then moved down to Winter Park with wife Patti, where Andrew and James were born.  He was a career salesmen and worked for Space Master before establishing A Fox and Sons Promotional Products which serviced many clients in the area.  At Space Master he hired Leah Wrobleski who now works with Andy’s son Andrew in the insurance industry.  Andy’s other son, James, is also in the insurance industry and works for Andy’s college roommate, Scott Lyden.  Andy was founder, chairman and past champion (1982) of the Hegewisch Open which spanned 25 years.  Some of the other notable winners were John McCormack, Scott Sutter, Steve Vidimos (7 way playoff), Pete Lanman, Pete Grompone, Bill Petas, Chris Morrow and Steve Nitz.

In Andy’s golfing career he had three hole-in-ones.  His first at Woodmar CC where he grew up playing. His second with lifelong friend John “Dudley” Race on the famous “Postage Stamp” hole at Royal Troon Golf Club.  He would often ask others if they have ever “aced the postage stamp?” Which Andy would reply for them, “I didn’t think so!” His third hole-in-one on the 8th hole at Winter Park CC with Andrew.

Though he was passionate about golf, he loved all sports and coached many teams at St. Margaret Mary and the YMCA of Winter Park.  His winning and competitive ethics were passed along to his sons and their teammates.

Andy was also a practical joking savant with an incredible sense of humor.  He was dubbed the “Dr. of Nameology” because he had the unique gift of doling out nicknames that stuck such as “Jimmer” for is son James, “Beef”, “Seve”, “Peewee”, “T-Rod”, “Peaches”, “Big-Mac”, “Ding”, “Hooter” and “Dollar Don” to name a few.

Andy, was a 27 year cancer survivor who focused on his blessings and positive thinking to help others. He founded Out Fox Cancer, an organization that promoted cancer screenings and awareness.  He served as an inspiration to all when he shared his surviving cancer story.  He would say he was “paying it forward.”

Andy also chaired the Fiddlers Green 5k – “The most fun 5k in Orlando.”  He would often say he “ran the race” so he didn’t have to “run the race!”

Of all of his accomplishments, he was most proud of being a Dad and “Grandpa Malone.”

Andy is survived by his sons, Andrew (Marissa) of Orlando, FL; James (Megan) Fox, of Maitland, FL; his former wife, Patti Fox, of Vero Beach, FL along with their three grandchildren, Amelia Fox, Jack M. Fox ll and Austin

I worked with Andy one summer in the mid1970s on the grounds crew at Woodmar Country Club. To say he was funny is a big understatement. He was also very patient-how do I know ? He helped me with my unbelieveably bad golf game, always focusing on what little positive there was and never criticizing or using any negative language. I can't say I knew him real well or we were close friends but I can say, from what I know of him, he was a great guy and I hold him, and his family, in my thoughts and prayers. With deepest condolences and sympathy, Mike Callahan.

Foxy❤️I remember when we both agreed that would be your name. I have so many great memories about our weekends on the Ave. They all consisted of brunching for hours, and at times ending up at your house for your chicken marsala. I loved our times together as they were always filled with love and laughter. You always made me feel like family. I hope you felt the same. I have missed you more than you can imagine these past 2 weeks. You were truly a blessing to me. ❤️

I am deeply saddened by AFox's passing. I met that fun character in 2009. He immediately gave me the name "Gooch" as in Gucci because he knew I loved handbags. I'm not sure if he ever called me Courtney again. Actually, he didn't-LOL! He always talked about Annie (his mom) and how we would hit it off if we ever met. Andy had enough patience to try to teach me to golf. The "try" was on me! Not him! He would have hung in there with me for life had I wanted to golf badly enough. He truly dug deep to be positive despite having life changing cancer. He used his cancer diagnosis to inspire others to get checked for cancers and to take care of themselves. I honestly don't know how Park Ave will ever be the same without Andy strutting about as he did for decades. I'm not sure he even ever met a stranger!!! I often prayed for Andy knowing his challenges were great and yet his heart was good. I know his boys will forever and ever miss him. I pray people will share their "AFox" stories with his grandkids because they deserve to know the funny, awesome person he was. I'm heartbroken they won't grow up with him. I could go on and on because I know the good but I will say to AFox, God Bless! God Speed! I know FOR SURE you are with your awesome Dad and Mom! I just know it! xoxoxo Always your Gooch!
