Obituary

John Thomas Pause, known affectionately to many as Jack Pause, peacefully passed away on September 29, 2023, following a brief battle with COVID.
Jack, born on March 18, 1944, in Michigan City, IN, was the beloved child of William and Jane Pause. He proudly graduated from Crown Point High School in Crown Point, Indiana, in 1962. Jack’s pursuit of knowledge led him to Murray State University in Murray, KY, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Radio and Television Production, Business, and Education in 1968. He continued his academic journey at Indiana University, achieving a Master of Science in Radio and Television and Education in 1972. In 1983, Jack obtained certification in counseling from Purdue University.

For more than two decades, Jack dedicated himself to teaching at East Chicago High School in East Chicago, IN, where he imparted knowledge in English, Speech, and Theater. His teaching journey spanned from 1969 to 1993 when he decided to retire and relocate to Fort Myers, Florida. There, he briefly worked at Mettler’s Clothing Stores before returning to the field of education, contributing to the Lee County School System and eventually joining the faculty at Florida South Western State College, where he shared his expertise in communication. Jack was as well part owner of Outfitters LTD. with his brother James and sister in-law Sharron, located in Crown Point, IN.

Beyond his passion for education, Jack was an enthusiastic art collector and a master of discovering unique bargains in the realms of art, fashion, and home decor.
Jack leaves behind cherished memories in the hearts of his twin brother, James (Sharon) Pause, his sister, Jane (Robert) Patterson, his nephews James Pause, Robert Patterson, Chris Pause, Craig Patterson, Brian Pause, Nicholas Patterson, and his niece Shelley Patterson, as well as his dear friends Eddie, Craig, Richard, and Jeff.

In accordance with Jack’s wishes, there will be no formal services, and cremation arrangements will be entrusted to Baldwin Brothers of Fort Myers, FL. The family kindly requests that those who wish to pay tribute to Jack consider making a donation in his honor to Habitat For Humanity, a cause he fervently supported, or to a scholarship program of their choice dedicated to advancing the education of young individuals.

A very important and beautiful person will be physically missing from our future holiday tables. His feisty spirit will forever be in our hearts. We will always love you Jack....And we will cherish all of the memories ... how you enriched our lives in unexpected ways and somehow made a special connection with everyone you encountered....and I know you will be a complaining angel watching over all of us from a very happy place. RIP Jack Pause ...March 18, 1944 - September 29, 2023 ... I will miss Jack's cooking, his short phone calls, his love of art, his road rage and sometimes cruel yet charming treatment of waitstaff..... Jack is one of my favorite people..a best friend, a neighbor and mentor that I have known for many years.... I hope and pray that I will see him again one day on the other side.
