Obituary

It brings us great sadness to announce that Dorothea Clare Mehl passed away early Sunday morning, April 5, 2024, in Clearwater, Florida. She was 90 years old.

Dot was born in Brooklyn to Daniel J. Devanie and Anna C. Higgins. And there she lived on Park Place until her much-beloved Brooklyn Dodgers left the borough. Continuing on in Queens, she worked for the NYC Board of Education as an Administrative Assistant until her retirement in 1990.

She then started the next chapter in her life, snowbirding between Tarpon Springs, Florida and New York’s Catskill Mountains, eventually settling year-round in Florida.

Dot is survived by her son Stephen, daughter-in-law Carol, and her deeply adored granddaughter Sophia, as well as three nieces, Mary, Elizabeth, and Lori, and a nephew, Robert.

She will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials in her name to: The Calvary Hospital via –https://fund.calvaryhospital.org/

  1. Mary Humphrey Rosenthal says:

The Rosenthal family from California are so very sorry to read about Aunt Dot's passing. My mom Mary Humphrey Rosenthal was Aunt Dot's first cousin. Mom who turned 90 in August has mentioned Dot so many times and just today was saying she needed to call her to catch up. On a hunch I googled Aunt Dot and came across the obituary.

If someone has Stephen's information, if you could pass it along to mom we would greatly appreciate it.

    May she rest in peace.

Where do I begin? I met
    Dot in 1963 when I was 20
years old. It was my first job with the NYC Education Department.
She immediately took me under her wing and we became life long friends.
We traveled over the years to the Bahamas, Pennsylvania with my two young sons, Acadia National Park, Lake George, NY, and Saratoga
Raceway, and many trips to Rockaway Beach, NY,
and the Catskill mountains in NY. We were both former Brooklyn Dodgers fans and turned our allegiance to the Amazing NY Mets, when the Dodgers deserted Brooklyn. Last September, I spent a wonderful week with her in her Palm
Harbor home. I last spoke with her on April 28th.
She was the most dearest and faithful friend and my life was blessed with her for 61 years. My most
deepest and heartfelt sympathy to her son Stephen, his wife Carol and precious daughter , Sophia.

    She was godmother to my
    younger son, Erik Volz.
    Last September,

I became really close to Dot when she was cutting back and ultimately stopped driving. I would walk up and get her mail and take her garbage, did her mailing when she needed it to be certified. When she closed down her villa I organized moving her over, cleaning out her house and running her estate sale. The first few months at Coral Oaks she was ambivalent but finally found her niche. She was a demon card player, loved the pool, and I confess I visited often. The plan this summer was for her to sneak me into water aerobics somehow, since I don’t live there. Her card playing buddies from here remained good friends, and we talked often. She adored Sophia, loved a good laugh, told me I was the only democrat she liked one evening as we were driving her back from a dinner out. she was a special woman and enriched my life.
