Obituary

George A. McCarty “Mac”, MD., age 81, of Ft. Myers, Florida, passed away peacefully, with his wife, Mary Ann, by his side, due to complications of Parkinson’s Disease on June 12, 2024.

Mac served in the U.S. Army as a General Medical Officer in Germany for 3 years. Following his service, he practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology at William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan for 34 years. He felt privileged to have trained decades of resident doctors. He was “Teacher of the Year” and delivered over 5,000 babies.

Mac and Mary Ann retired to Heritage Palms Country Club in Ft. Myers, where he continued his “career” in golf and cheering on his Michigan Wolverines. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann, five children, Robert McCarty (Libby), Barbara Clauer (Chris), Andrew Dunn (Jill), John Dunn, Christian Dunn (Britney), 11 grandchildren, and his best little pal, Scout.

Our sincere gratitude to Hope Hospice for their compassionate care in his final days.

A private service and committal with military honors, will be held at Sarasota National Cemetery.

I came across this news as I was going through my 28yr old’s baby book and decided to look up this amazing man. He delivered my son as a double footling breech. Only he could do this and we had a full room watching him! I was blessed to take care of him and he in return took good care of me. I will be forever grateful to know him.

Dr. McCarty delivered 3 of my 4 children and he was the finest doctor that I've ever had the pleasure of having. Smart, confident and great bedside manor. His lovely wife Mary Ann shared a little story that I needed to hear at the time that I just recently shared with my daughter who just had her first child.

McCarty had a profound impact on young physicians who were afforded an opportunity to learn from one of the best OB/GYN's of our community. He loved the role of physician-mentor that grew to colleague-friend which I still cherish to this day. I remember him fondly and with utmost respect.
