Obituary

Mack Edward Mitchell, Maj. USMC Retired, 98, August 27,1926-November 26, 2024

Mack was born in South Bend, Indiana. After graduating high school, he joined the Marine Corps for which he flew fighter jets in the Korean War.

In 1954 he left the military as a 1st Lieutenant and married the love of his life, Anne Marie Osti. He returned to South Bend and worked on missile cones for Bendix Corporation.  In 1962 Mack was given an opportunity to return to the Marine Corps as a commissioned warrant officer to train in flying helicopters. He trained in Pensacola, Florida before transferring to his first duty in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

In 1964 he was sent to Vietnam where he earned many air medals; the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross among them. During that time, he was selected to serve in the presidential squadron in Quantico, Virgina. It was not long before he became a Presidential pilot of Marine one. He served from President Johnson’s administration through President Carter’s administration with one tour of Vietnam in between.  Mack retired in 1978, then went on to fly jets in Little Rock, Arkansas and helicopters in Louisiana.

Mack Leaves his Daughter Dina Marie Holyfield, Son-in-law John M. Suddeth, Grandsons  Shon E. Holyfield, John B. Suddeth and Stephen D. Suddeth, Great-Grandchildren Sarah B. Holyfield, Juliet E. Holyfield, Caspian G. Holyfield and Maxine A Suddeth.

Mack is Predeceased in death by Spouse Anne M Mitchell, Granddaughter Summer D Holyfield, Mother & Father Mary & Mace Mitchell, Siblings Kenny and William Mitchell.

Mack and Anne will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.

    Uncle Mack was like a father to me. I loved him very much. I will miss him. He was a wonderful example of what we all should be like.

    Uncle Mack was like a father to me. He was kind, sensitive and considerate and always a gentleman. He never bragged or boasted about himself although he had good reason. A true hero. I will miss him greatly but I’m glad he is with his sweet wife, Auntie Anne. I love you, Uncle Mack. Andrea
