Obituary

Francis (Bud) Dooley passed away suddenly February 24, 2025. He was previously a resident of Fort Collins, CO, and recently moved to The Villages, Florida. He was born to Francis Sr and C. Florence Dooley in Rome, NY on April 28, 1951. After college, he served with the Army Rangers, Fort Lewis, WA and then as a Captain in the Army Corps of Engineers stationed in several states. After discharge, Bud worked in the oil industry traveling to offshore rigs and inland oil wells in California before transferring to refineries in CA, WY and TX. Upon retirement in Colorado he re-ignited his passion for swimming, biking and indulging his wife with hiking. The recent move to Florida found him continuing his Masters swimming and adding water volleyball and dragon boating several times weekly. In a tradition begun with their first of many homes, Bud and his wife renovated their newly purchased house, and he was especially looking forward to completing his “lanai” outdoor area. His enthusiasm for organization and precision lives on with his family. He is survived by his wife, Marsha, daughter Barbara (Matthew) Whiffen of San Diego, CA, daughter Lauren (Matthew) Brand, Olathe, KS, granddaughter Charlotte Whiffen, sister Mary (Linn) Weeda of Anchorage, AK, and sister-in-law Glenda (Dennis) Muirhead, Albuquerque, NM.

Buddy and I grew up in the 1950's and 1960's in our Belmont and Riverside Drive neighborhood and we went thru grade school, junior high, and high school together. I always remember his birthday being April 28 as mine is September28 and approx. 6 years ago, I researched him thru Google and ended up calling him (to his surprise!) and we reminisced for a long time about our childhood years. This morning I researched again to get his number to wish him a happy birthday and to catch up...and....I was heart broken when Google returned his obituary. You have to remember that growing up during that time was very different than it is today for young kids...friends were so much closer and we shared so many daily adventures together..whether it was riding our bikes, playing cowboys and Indians, neighborhood kick ball, or just hanging out together . Buddy and Mary Beth would walk to school with my sister Marie and I...thru blizzards...bundled up and trudging through sometimes feet of snow to get to Garden St. and Columbus schools, and Staley Jr. High. Buddy was like the brother that neither of us had. I can remember playing with him outside of his house the day his dad passed away, and I can also remember after his father's passing how several of the fathers of our close friends would take Buddy with them and their sons on fishing trips (Butchy Emeterio's father) and for a weekend trip to a farm owned by Tommy Van Etten's parents. Buddy leaves me with nothing but truly great childhood memories, and from the tributes that I read here, continues to leave those truly great lasting memories to all that knew and loved him...
Buddy...I am a better person for growing up and sharing your childhood life, and I extend my deepest sympathies to your sister Mary Beth, your immediate family members, and to all those whose life will be emptier without you in it.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear brother-in-law Bud. His kindness to his family, to his friends, and to his community was deeply inspiring.
I met him soon after marrying his sister, Mary, and was delighted that both he and Marcia warmly welcomed me into the family. I was delighted in watching his family grow – he clearly enjoyed fatherhood!
I will always remember him with joy, and I thank him for having been in my life.

Leon and I were truly saddened to hear of Bud's passing. We have wonderful memories of an evening we spent at your home in Ft. Collins with a gathering of friends. That evening Bud was showing us the beautiful garden the two of you planted He showed us details of his watering system, we were so impressed. You could tell he was proud of the garden. Please know we share in your loss and hold you in our hearts.

    Leon and Janine

To my dear brother Bud. It’s taken me a long time to send this. May God be holding you in his arms, then giving you to our parents, in-laws, relatives and friends who have gone before you. Give a hug to all the pets, too. Send peace and love to our world! We will always have Buddy and MaryBeth as a special memory. I will always love you.

Our deepest condolences to Bud's wife Marsha, daughters Barbara and Lauren, and all his family. We are heartbroken with the news of Bud's passing. As a college friend and fraternity brother, Bud was great - a smart, athletic, friendly, kind, helpful, reliable good guy and forever friend! You could count on Bud for anything! Our having dinner and spending time together with Bud and Marsha during the June 2023 Oneonta State College and ITK Fraternity Alumni Weekend will always be a treasured memory for us. We hope special and happy memories help bring peace to all who had the privilege to know Bud. With our thoughts and prayers, Jim and Linda Dallara

We shared many meals, beverages and games with Bud and Marsha. Bud was a gracious host, except when it came to letting his company win a few games. Our hearts are breaking for Marsha, Barbara and Lauren. We will miss him so much.

Bud was such a thoughtful person. We were so blessed to know him and share many meals, bottles of wine, and games. He was a great host, except he forgot that you let your company win games sometimes. Our hearts are breaking for Marsha, Barbara and Lauren. We will miss him.

Bud was Dennis' closest and I might say only close friend. We shared so may wonderful times with both Bud and Marsha. When Dennis was diagnosed with cancer Bud came out to California to be with us. Dennis was weak from chemo but Bud took him out for walks and rides and they talked about life. Now they are together and that is comforting. Bud was a sincere and loving man. I am thanking God for him!

Fond memories of our Mohawk River canoe trip and hitching around upstate NY back in our college days. Loved hosting you and Marsha as the first folks from Oneonta times to visit my mountain home here in Colorado. So hard to believe this happened and to forget the plans you and Marsha and I made for future fun here in the mountains.
