Obituary

Janet Liverett Summey, 71, of Edgewater, FL, passed away on September 10, 2024, at New Smyrna Beach hospital. Jan was born September 14, 1952, in Ashville, NC, the daughter of the late Gordon Mitchell Liverett and Elizabeth Johnson Liverett. Jan graduated from Asheville High School in 1971, then attended King’s College in Charleston, SC.

Jan married her husband Gary on October 3, 1986. They were married for 36 years until Gary’s death in November of 2022. Jan and Gary loved each other beyond measure. They were the quintessential partnership and devoted their lives to raising their son, David. Jan was a devoted and loving mom who dedicated herself to providing for David and teaching him how to love others.

Jan started her financial services career with Travelers Insurance before moving on to Schofield and eventually Protective Life. Jan worked for Protective for 24 years and retired to FL in 2017. Jan served a remarkable career and retired with a VP position. More importantly, Jan developed and fostered countless professional and personal relationships during her time at Protective. She is remembered by all for her love, warmth, and dedication to her craft.

Upon retirement, Jan enjoyed volunteering in the community, especially at the New Smyrna Beach hospital. She was a calming, dedicated presence in the hospital and cherished all the memories and relationships she built over the years as a volunteer. Jan was an active member of Coronado United Methodist Church where she loved volunteering and serving on the communion team.

Jan is survived by son, David Summey; daughter-in-law, Alexa Summey; granddaughter, Ellie Summey; grandson, Nolen Summey; and cousins, Drew Johnson, Julia Terrizzi, Donna Helms, John McReary, and Gay-Lynn Williams. Jan is preceded in death by her husband, Gary Summey.

A memorial service will the held at Coronado United Methodist Church in New Smyrna Beach, FL on Tuesday, September 17 at 2:00pm.
