Obituary

John David Edwards, a longtime resident of Port Orange, Florida, passed away on May 10, 2025, at the age of 77.

Born on August 12, 1947, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, John was the youngest of five children, all of whom preceded him in death. He served proudly in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division during the Vietnam War and later dedicated 30 years to the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier, where his friendly manner and dependable service made him a familiar face in the community.

John had a real zest for life. He loved skiing, tennis, and cycling, and he loved sharing a good story even more. A natural storyteller and self-proclaimed ladies’ man (at least in his own mind), John never missed an opportunity to chat, joke, or make someone laugh. He didn’t mind talking to anyone and had a unique way of bringing humor to the everyday.

Though it seems he didn’t leave anything written for this occasion—classic John—we think he’d be just fine with that. He lived in the moment, with a big heart and a generous spirit. He especially had a soft spot for animals. John was known for giving treats to neighborhood dogs on his postal route and even looked after stray cats, offering them food and warmth on his patio.

He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews, and he will be dearly missed by the many friends whose lives he brightened with his stories, laughter, and kindness.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Johnny was more than just an uncle — he was a constant presence, a quiet hero in our everyday lives. Always ready to lend a hand, he stepped in without hesitation, whether it was helping pack up our things when we moved to St. Pete or patiently sitting beside me as I learned to drive. I’ll never forget the day I got my license — not just because I passed, but because he was there, letting me use his car, cheering me on the whole way.
He had a gift for making people laugh, even during life’s tougher moments. His storytelling — short, sharp, and always on point — could light up a room and lift a heavy heart. He had this way of weaving humor into anything, turning even the most ordinary memories into something unforgettable.
Holidays were his time to shine — especially when food was involved. He loved it all and wasted no time digging in. While others were still finding their seats, his plate would already be clean. In a family gathering of 23 to 25 people, that was a talent in itself.
A true Miami sports fan, he never missed a chance to root for the Dolphins or the Marlins. If there was a game and a way to get there, you could bet he was going — and likely bringing someone along for the ride.
He was a helper, a teacher, a storyteller, a fan, and above all, a kind and generous soul. His impact on our lives can’t be measured, only felt — in the laughs we still share, the lessons we carry forward, and the love he gave so freely. We’ll miss him deeply, but his spirit will always be part of us.
May you be at peace now, and be joined by your other family members.
    Sharon
