Obituary

Judy Bone Addison, age 82, passed away on December 26, 2024, in Ft. Myers, FL. She was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, and attended Bexley High School where she met and married her adoring high school sweetheart, Tom. Judy and Tom were blessed in many ways during their 60 years of marriage, but their greatest joy was their family of three daughters, Amelia (Jeff) Schultz, Laurel (Bruce) Newman, and Jennifer (Scott) Becker; and eight grandchildren, Jackie, Benjamin, Daniel and Isabel Schultz, Benjamin and Aden Newman, and Margot and Cole Becker, their extended family and many dear friends. They lived on Sanibel Island, FL, after Tom’s retirement in 2002 and moved to Shell Point Retirement Community after Hurricane Ian.

Judy and Tom were married in Columbus, OH on June 27, 1964. Tom’s work took them to Indianapolis, IN, Bow, NH, Racine, WI, Calgary, AB and back to Racine where they lived until retirement. They made friends everywhere, and Judy was intentional about maintaining her many friendships, regularly bringing family and friends together. Judy was a consummate hostess, gladly opening her home for parties and dinners, making everyone feel welcome. After brief stints teaching music, most of Judy’s efforts were spent on volunteer work – except for the precious time she spent with Tom helping him start and build his new business, Qualtech.

Music ran deep in Judy’s soul. She came from a musical family and graduated from Northwestern University School of Music with a major in Vocal Performance. After graduation Judy directed and sang with a Junior League quartet, sang in the choir of every church she attended, started a musical kindergarten in Bow, NH, and served as President of the Racine Symphony Orchestra for many years, inaugurating their annual Lakeside Pops series. She instilled a love of music and singing in her daughters and grandchildren, and she directed operettas with parts for each of them during summer family vacations. Christmas season in the Addison house always started with singing Christmas carols after Thanksgiving dinner.

Judy’s deep faith was reflected in her loving spirit. She was kind, generous, thoughtful and forgiving, and she expressed her faith in a quiet episcopalian demeanor. She was a “cradle Episcopalian,” baptized at St. Alban’s Church in Bexley, Ohio. Her roots at St. Michael and All Angels, Sanibel, run deep. In the early 50’s she attended services with her grandparents at the Bailey Grocery Store at the ferry landing, the precursor of St. Michaels and All Angels. She directed and sang in choirs, served on vestries and committees but her greatest joy came from directly serving others. Her beautiful smile and gentle nature quieted many anxious hearts. Even in extremis at the end of her life she showed love and compassion for those who cared for her.

Judy’s warm, cheerful, and laughing spirit welcomed all and made her a friend to many. She especially enjoyed the annual visits with her Kappa sorority sisters and husbands from across the country as well as the loving relationships she nurtured as a member of P.E.O., a philanthropic women’s organization.

Judy loved Sanibel Island, visiting there from her earliest years with her parents. She experienced and made many beautiful memories with family and friends at their cottage (and later condominium) on West Gulf Drive and on the beaches of Sanibel with grandchildren. Judy served on the Board of the Sanibel Historical Village & Museum and loved giving tours to family, friends and visitors. Tom & Judy enjoyed retirement on Sanibel Island before moving recently to Shell Point in Ft. Myers, FL. Their children (and later, grandchildren) considered Sanibel a second home.

Judy enjoyed adventure and travel, reading and book clubs, sewing, baking, playing bridge, spending time with loved ones across the US and around the world, and especially being a mom and grandmom. She was a steadfast supporter of her girls’ activities – driving to 5am swim practices, cheering at their sports/music/drama competitions, and hosting team parties. Judy also organized many family get-togethers – horseback riding in Canada, vacations at Walloon Lake in Michigan, and a 50th anniversary celebration in Tuscany. Her girls also remember her for her love of sweets and her Christmas cookie baking tradition which she passed down to them. Her grandchildren were all blessed by the love of their “Mimi” who always planned fun activities and supported them in their lives and interests. Most recently, Judy enjoyed making new friends at Shell Point in Ft. Myers, FL. Judy’s faith, kindness, good humor, smile, and warmth will forever remain a cherished part of her legacy.

Judy is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Hugh and Barbara Bone, and her sister, Cynthia. A funeral service in her memory will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 1, 2025, at St. Michael and All Angels Church, 2304 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel, FL. All are invited to a reception after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Michael’s Church – Outreach Fund, to Sanibel Historical Museum & Village, or to P.E.O. in Judy’s honor. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.baldwincremation.com in their online guestbook.

We are so sorry to hear of Judy's passing. You and your family made us feel welcome at Blue Gulf during our time there. We always enjoyed it when your family would sing around the holidays.

Dearest Tom and friends and family,
I am grateful to have been Judy’s PEO sister. She was always so poised, sweet and delightful! Also grateful to be in her “stars of Sanibel” play reading group! She was lighthearted and always knew her part when we rehearsed. Most of all, I appreciated being a fellow docent at the Historical Museum. She had so many fascinating memories of growing up here, taking the boat to arrive and actually experiencing daily life before the Causeway. I will miss her very much - yet relish all the special moments I had with her. Feel a hug, Tom. You were a wonderful “Bil” to get to know as well!
    Love
    Georgianna & Steve Sorensen

Tom, I am so sorry for your loss. You have my sincere condolences. I fondly remember a Christmas party that you both hosted many years ago. You led the singing of caroles and there was much merriment. Bless you and your family in this time of mourning.
