Obituary

Mary Kathleen Montgomery Broughton (Katie), 94 ½, of Fort Myers, passed away peacefully with family present on Wednesday the 20th of August 2025. She was born and raised in Tice, known now as East Fort Myers, FL, daughter of the late Clarence and Effie (Storter) Montgomery. Katie was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Wally Broughton; daughter, Bonnie Wilson; and granddaughter, Melissa Morrison. She is survived by son, David Broughton of Lacombe, LA; grandchildren, Julie Noble (Adam) of Lehigh Acres, FL; Joseph Broughton (Nora) of Alva, FL; Laura Nguyen (Jason) of Madisonville, TX; Ryan Broughton (Britt) of Baton Rouge, LA; Caroline Everett (Tim) of Ruston, LA; and 8 great-grandchildren.

Katie was a 1949 graduate of Fort Myers High School. She worked for WMYR radio in the 1960’s in advertising before becoming a sales associate for Avco Financial Services, formerly known as Seaboard Finance Company. Later, she became a business co-owner of Wally’s Farm and Garden Center on Gladiolus Dr in Fort Myers. Her passions in life included sewing and crafts; she made gowns for the Edison Pageant of Light, clothing for her family, and clothing and crafts for charitable sewing projects. She was our health and wellness guru, sharing knowledge and tips for homeopathic remedies and all natural solutions. Katie had an innate talent for joke and storytelling. She was a member of Church of the Cross, the American Sewing Guild and a past President of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She volunteered for her community at Gulf Coast Hospital, Meals on Wheels and other various organizations. Katie made friends wherever she went and continually connected with new friends, creating life-long friendships. She had a unique way of making each one feel special. She was not just extraordinary, she was legendary!

A memorial service will be held at Church of the Cross on Saturday August 30th, 2025 located at 13500 Freshman Lane in Fort Myers at 10:30 am, with lunch and friendship to follow at her granddaughter, Julie’s home in Lehigh Acres.

Katie was a dear friend and mentor throughout my life. We shared many memories together from the time. I was a child up until she went home. We shared so many memories together. I did her hair for years at my mom’s salon and every week it was so much fun Telling jokes to each other and having everyone in the salon laughing. Katie taught me how to garden. I would make many trips to Wally‘s farm and garden center, and they both gave me information that stays with me to this day on how to grow a beautiful garden. Katie taught me how to make guava jelly, and as I grew up and had trees of my own I would share guavas with her and we would reminisce over a lifetime of laughter and things that we did together. Katie is a shining star in all of our lives and will be greatly missed.

I know Aunt Katie through my husband (Don Taylor). She was the life of the party, any party. Katie always had a joke to share (sometimes clean and funny, sometimes not)! We will miss her smile and laughter.

What a loss. Katie was one of my Mom's (Betty Boyette Keller) best friend. Even as kids we loved being involved in her
conversations as it was always something funny and or educational. She will be missed by all.
