Obituary
Nancy A. Whitmore, 77 of Machias, NY died Sunday, February 25th 2024 in Titusville FL. She left this life the way she lived it: surrounded by her large and loving family.
Born November 11, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Mattie (Luce) Gemmill. Nancy was a graduate of Cattaraugus Central School, class of 1964. After graduation she attended stewardess school in Minneapolis MN., receiving certifications in both reservations and flight assistance. Upon completion she began her first employment as an airline reservationist in New York City.
During a trip home, she met the love of her life – Denny Whitmore of Little Valley, N.Y. They were married on Aug. 20, 1965 and raised their three children in a loving home that was always filled with laughter, good-natured teasing and fun times.
In 1981 after raising her beloved children and assisting her husband with his logging business, Nancy was determined to begin her career as an LPN and graduated from St. Francis nursing school in the top 5% of her class. Upon graduation, she was employed at St. Francis Hospital in Olean NY and later at the Olean Medical Group until her retirement in 1991. Throughout her retirement she helped run multiple family businesses, Whitmore Logging, Cherry Ridge Hardwoods, Allegheny Mountain Hardwoods, and The Lighter Side Bar.
Nancy was a longtime member First Congregational Church of Little Valley where she served as Deacon. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and loved researching family genealogy and lineage. Nancy was very proud of her rich family history and enjoyed sharing her findings with family and friends. She loved horses, traveling, landscaping, the Buffalo Bills, spending time with family at their home in Lime Lake and attending her grandchildren’s sporting and other events.
In addition to her husband of 58 years, Nancy is survived by daughter Britta (Mark) Yarnes of Portville NY and sons D.J. (Elise) Whitmore of Little Valley NY and Arron (Amanda) Whitmore of Bradford PA. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Kirsti Whitcomb, Brandon Yarnes, Tyler Yarnes, Gabby (Mike) DePonceau, Sierra Whitmore, McKenzie Whitmore, Logan Whitmore, Deni Whitmore, Brianna Goodell and Evan Whitmore, as well as four great grandchildren: Presley, Cameron, Mila and Kyla. Survivors also include sisters-in-law Joyce Gemmill of Gowanda NY and Wendy (Bill) Hundley of Richardson, Tx., brothers-in-law Paul Coon of Penn Yan NY, Dorn (Yvette) Whitmore of Titusville FL, and many special nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Nancy was predeceased by two brothers Harry Gemmill and Ronald Gemmill and one sister, Gay Coon.
Nancy’s family and many friends will miss her laughter, quick wit and fun-loving personality that made every get-together a good time.
A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Little Valley, 301 Rock City St. Little Valley NY on Saturday June 29th at 10:30 am.
