Obituary

Phil Simmons, beloved father, husband, grandfather, and partner. He served up love and laughter in every corner of his life. Whether he was netting victories on the Pickleball court or skunking opponents in cribbage, Phil was always “all in” with his passions—both personal and professional.

From his 40 year career in fixed income portfolios to his daily domination at the local pickleball court, he was highly invested in everything he did, especially in those he loved.

Loyal, authentic, and always ready for a good time, Phil had a knack for putting a spin on life that made it a little more fun for everyone around him.

He’s preceded in death by his parents Betty & Allen Simmons, brother Dr. Denis Simmons (Gretchen Simmons) and his loving wife, MaryAnn Simmons, and son Eric Simmons. Phil is survived by his partner in life Barbara Clevenger; his four children, Samuel Simmons, Jessica Fischer (Michael Fischer), Al Simmons (Samantha Simmons), and Sarah Lindgren (Adam Lindgren); and his six grandkids—Joey, Eli, Sloane, Lucy, Henry, and Sullivan (Philip) who are most likely to carry on Phil’s card shark legacy.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Operation Playground Foundation, a 501c3 he co-founded and was deeply passionate about. Operation Playground is committed to the development, enhancement, and improvement of the facilities and programs for the youth and adults of Frankfort, IL.

A celebration of Phil’s life will be held in Frankfort, IL (details below). Feel free to bring your best stories, your strongest cribbage hand, and your competitive spirit—just be warned, those Simmons’ kids fully intend to win.

Rest in peace, Phil. Your memory will live on in the hearts of those who shared countless rounds of fun with you. —

I met Phil in 1989 at Shearson in the board of trade. If he was having a tough day you could always cheer him up by asking about his family. His children were young and his pride and joy. He was lots of fun and a great friend to everyone.

I did not know Phil too well off the court but met him through pickleball here in The Villages. I always enjoyed playing with him both on the same team or across the net. He was competitive on the court but always played with such sportsmanship. I can still picture some of his left-handed drives for a winner! He also was so complimentary of others' play. We were meant to be on the same pickleball team at Rohan this season so was looking forward to playing more with him. He will be missed by me and by so many! Such a nice individual to be around. Rest in Peace, my friend!

I just heard the news about Phil. we worked together at American National Bank in 1982! Phil taught me about the Muni Bond business when I sat right behind him while he was smoking his pipe in the office (yes that really happened back then). I left to join EF Hutton and convinced Phil he should join me as well which he did. We worked together off and on for years. Always the professional and never a mean word about anyone. I saw Phil a little over a year ago and he seemed so happy even though his wife had passed away. Rest in Peace my friend!

I've know Phil almost 50 years. We met working at EF Hutton. We worked at the Board of Trade, Sears Tower and his last firm Stifel Nicolaus. That is where we became walking buddies. We walked everyday on lunch break. We were like the postal service. No matter rain, sleet, snow, we ventured out and had our great talks while we walked. RIP my dear buddy! Love Rox Pantano

So sorry to hear Sarah and family. Phil was definitely one of a kind. I'm glad that I met him and volunteered for Operation Playground because of him.
