Obituary

Richard John Tarpinian, born on February 27, 1934.

Richard passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on September 5, 2025 in Longwood, Florida.

Richard (Rich) is survived by his wife of 72 years, Marianna, his daughters Helen and Marian, his grandchildren (Marianna, Gabriella, Joanna and Anthony), his great grandchildren (Zahra(10), Quinn(7), Jazmine(3) and Arman(1)), and his niece and nephews (John, Jerry, Diane and Michael).

Richard joins in heaven with his parents (Nishan and Hripsime Tarpinian) and his son Stephen Richard Tarpinian.

Richard’s passion for people, travel and cars is a legacy to all who knew him.  Rich was a veteran of the Korean war for the Airforce.   He worked on the aerospace industry on Long Island and was a very successful business owner of RJT Educational Training Systems until he retired to Shelter Island.

Richard and Marianna raised their family in Franklin Square, NY  and for almost 40 years were Shelter Island residents.    Rich served as president of the Shelter Island Lions Club and loved organizing the Scallop Dinner each year.

Notification for a Celebration of Life will be provided at a future date.

Condolences can be communicated to his family at stjym8@gmail.com.

I had the pleasure of working with Richard in his last years. He was always so kind, funny, and a true gentleman. We will miss his sweet smile and how he used to steal our lollipops. They were his favorite. We also admired the love and care he showed for his wife everyday. Our hearts are broken for this loss but grateful for the honor of knowing him. Sincere condolences to his family.

Richard Tarpinian was our AZ “papa”. My first meeting was at the Armenian Church in Scottsdale when he asked me to translate his mother’s funeral info from Armenian to English. He insisted to take me out to lunch for my quick action and to invite my husband as well. Lunch did not work out that day and I invited him and his “Odar” wife Marianna for Mezze and cocktails , to our house. The rest became “corn on over for Armenian dinner”, Barrett Jackson outing “, rounds of golf and stories from his childhood. My husband and Richard shared their passion for cars and a lasting friendship paved cherished memories, in Scottsdale as well as during our visits on Shelter Island ❤️
Asdvadz Hokeen Loosavoreh, dear paregam ❤️ Rest in eternal peace
