Obituary
Captain Robert Edmond “Bob” Johnson, 87, slipped peacefully into eternity on December 29th, 2024 within the comfort of his own home.
Bob was born in Newburgh, NY, as the only child of Ed and Mary Johnson. He graduated from St. Francis DeSales High School in Utica, NY, where he was the captain of the swim team, despite his distaste of swimming. His true passion was skiing, and he was an expert on both water and snow. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Villanova University when he wasn’t spending time on the slopes.
Bob married Jeanie Niles on February 11, 1961 in Utica, NY. Shortly after, Bob embarked on a 20 year career in the Air Force, which included a one year tour to Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. He retired from Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls, Montana and enjoyed reflecting on his days as a fighter pilot. Bob was also a member of the National Ski Patrol during his years in Montana.
Bob and Jeanie returned east in the late 90s. They spent their summers at their lakeside home in Old Forge, NY and wintered in Melbourne Beach, FL. Bob was a life long lover of boats and always had a loyal sheepdog by his side.
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 64 years, Jeanie; his four children: Scott (Cindy Cushing), Daniel, Mitch (Karen) and Andrea Wilke; seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, as well as many close friends and relatives.
A service will be held at Bob’s cherished St. Olaf’s Chapel in the Adirondack Mountains at a later date. He will receive a military color guard burial at the Niles family plot in Westmoreland, NY
The family greatly appreciates all of the love, prayers, and support which continue to be made in his honor.
