Obituary
Robert William Jones, 91, passed away peacefully at Cornerstone Hospice, The Villages, Florida on Saturday, May 10th, 2025 after a full and adventurous life. Bob moved to The Villages full-time in 1998 from Chicago, IL.
He served four years in the U.S.A.F. during the Korean War, and was very proud to be a US veteran and lifetime member of the American Legion. Bob retired from the Chicago Police Department with the rank of Supervising Sergeant in 1992 after 32 years of service, and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and Sergeant’s Association. He completed a Master’s Degree in Sociology from the University of Chicago and taught at the Police Academy and Chicago City College.
In his younger years he played basketball, football and softball, and continued to play and manage the Chicago softball teams “Da Bears” and neighborhood “Rio Ponderosa” while enjoying retirement in Florida. He was a life-long Chicago Bears fan and loved to play cards, travel, and tell his stories to anyone he met.
Survived by his wife of 33 years Shirley; and children Gary (Phyllis) Jones, Dale (Shelagh) Jones, Colleen Moses, Bonnie Jones, and Bruce (Kim) Jones; step-daughters Christina (Kevin) Welzen, Corey (Leif) Heckel, and Colleen (Duane) Gallo; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Also survived by his sister Fleur Engelbrecht, of The Village; as well as many nieces; nephews; and cousins.
A mass will be held at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church, The Villages, on Thursday, June 5th at 8:30 am. Interment will take place on August 8th at 2 pm at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL. Memorials to Cornerstone Hospice House, The Villages, or a charity of your choice.
