Susan C. (Barrett) Stier

Susan, originally from St. Cloud, MN, passed away on March 1, 2019, at age 67, at home in Cape Coral, FL, surrounded by family and friends.  A visitation, followed by a mass, was held on March 11 at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Cape Coral.

A Happy Hour Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, May 22, at the Eagles Club in St. Cloud, beginning at 5:00.

Susan was born in St. Cloud to Duane and Teresa Barrett. Susan graduated from Holy Spirit Grade School, Cathedral High School, and St. Cloud State University.  Susan met Timothy in 1968, and they married in 1973.  The couple moved from St. Cloud in 1978.  Over the following 26 years, they lived and worked in Honolulu, HI, New York, NY, Little Rock, AR, southern California (near Los Angeles), and Springfield VA (near Washington, DC).  Until her retirement in 2004, Susan worked as an elementary education teacher.

Upon retirement in 2004, Susan and Timothy moved to Cape Coral, and also established a summer residence in St. Cloud.  In retirement, Susan enjoyed sailing, camping, and music with family and friends, as well as cooking, gardening, and volunteer activities.

She is survived by her husband Timothy Stier; mother Teresa Barrett; sisters, Barbara Nieland (Thomas) & Mary Jo Polfliet (Donald); brothers Eugene Barrett (Rita) & Richard Barrett; one niece, nephews, & grand nephews, including godchild Nicholas Nieland.

Susan was preceded in death by her father, Duane Barrett.

A special thank you to all those who gave their care and support to Susan during the final weeks of her battle with cancer, including the Cape Coral Hospital and Hope (Hospice) Health Care, and especially her sister Barbara and  close friends Jude, Lenore, Sharon, Jane, & Rodger.

Memorials are preferred to the Edison Sailing Center (a youth sailing organization) in Fort Myers, Florida.

I am so sad and shocked to learn of Sue”s passing. We taught together at Bancroft Elementary in Arlington, Virginia for 4 years. Sue was certainly the best teacher I have ever met in all my 30 years of teaching. She was a wonderful friend and mentor. So many children got a strong start in life because of her talent and caring. The entire staff loved and respected her. Sue will be truly missed. My sincere condolences to Tim and her family. We need more people in the world like Sue.

We're so sad to hear about Sue's passing. We were surprised. She was a wonderful cousin and great friend. Howard is so glad to have all the childhood memories of Sue. Prayers to Teresa, Tim, Barb, Mary Jo, Gene and Rick. She was one of a kind, in the most loving way, and will be immensely missed by us. Please accept our deepest and sincere condolences. She was too young to leave us.
